PiCam via HDMI cable problem solved

Post by g3yjr » Thu Dec 08, 2022 4:01 pm

My PiCam works with PD4 directly via a ribbon cable.

In order to use the PiCam via a cable, I bought a couple of Petit Studio adapters from Pimoroni and modified them for screen ground and pin 13.

I used an HDMI cable with an adapter fitted on each end. I can see 3.3V on the remote (PiCam end) adapter, so I seem to have the ribbons the right way up in their connectors, but the PiCam doesn't work via the HDMI cable.

I tried checking continuity ribbon to ribbon via the HDMI cable and all pins looked OK except pin 14. Might this be my problem?

Graham

That will be an unsuitable HDMI Cable. Pin 14 carries the configuration data commands for the camera. See the table on this page https://wiki.batc.org.uk/CSI-2_to_HDMI

Try another cable - even if you have to borrow it from the family TV!

That worked for me too, not all cables are created equal, ironically it was a cheap one that did work for me.
Good luck.

I probably have another cable somewhere. I have previously used the current cable for actual HDMI from RasPi to a monitor.

I'll have a search.

I bought a new HDMI cable from Pimoroni & now I get an image on PD4's PiCam Monitor function.

The cable which works is marked 30V VW-1 HTS

There is some more detail on how I hooked up the HQ PiCam using an HDMI cable here:

Thanks Dave & Gareth.
