Recording VLC Winter Hill windows.

Post by M5TXJ » Thu Aug 25, 2022 11:16 am

Hi all,

Just wondering if it's possible to record incoming signals from the four Winter Hill VLC windows? If I right click on the window I get the pop up menu with record option but clicking on it does nothing.

On Windows? It should be recording, but there's no onscreen indication when doing it via the menu and the default recordings folder is deeply buried somewhere.

Using capital R to turn recording on and off gives a temporary onscreen indication. Set the VLC recordings folder in VLC, TOOLS, PREFERENCES, INPUT/CODECS and restart VLC / whpcviewer.

When using whpcviewer, hit ? to display the help screen with other VLC keyboard commands.

Thanks Brian, it is Windows 10, I'll give the capital R a try. There is no option to set a recordings folder in the menu, perhaps my VLC install is corrupted although whpcviewer works perfectly.

You set the default saving folders in VLC settings. CTRL+P or menu Tools->Preferences->Input/Codecs Intuitive, to nobody.

By default, whpcviewer doesn't show the VLC menu bar, so first do CTRL-H to display it.

Hi Brian, Mike,

There was no option to choose a folder in the input/codecs section. A Google suggested upgrading to the latest version, it already was. I uninstalled and reinstalled VLC and the option appeared. Right clicking on the window brings the menu up with the record option as before, it still doesn't work, but I'm pleased to report that shift+r now does work. Thanks for the input.

That is concerning. Where did you get the original version of VLC? Make sure it is only coming from the official site. VLC has advanced settings simple/all. It is very hard to find things with the all settings option selected. I am not convinced all the settings are actually in all settings. I could not find the record directory either. the snapshot directory was there. VLC is a bit of a mess I agree, but it is free and highly capable.

Hi Mike,

Original download and all subsequent have been from Videolan website. The option to set the directory is there now, it was totally missing before the reinstall even though its the same version? I'm happy it's working now, next step will be migrating to OBS and I think that will be a test for me, I'm not a computer expert by any means.

Cheers Dave.
