Portsdown Updates are Safe Again!

Following a surprise upgrade to the Raspberry Pi Linux kernel earlier in the week, any update or new build for a Portsdown resulted in a non-working system. This was because of a number of changes in the way the touchscreen graphics are handled.

Unfortunately the Portsdown graphics are rather specialised and this update was aimed at the thousands of "desktop" users of the Raspberry Pi - not the couple of hundred Portsdown users. That said, I have since had good support from the Raspberry Pi foundation software engineers and have now sorted out all the issues (I hope).

So, new builds and updates should now work. If you have attempted a new build or update this week and have a "bricked" Portsdown, simply log in by ssh and then do another software update, (System, Software Update). If the menu does not come up when you first log in, just type menu, press enter, and it should start.

The Portsdown A27 build is still broken. I have not fixed this as I will be deleting it and replacing it with the first Portsdown 4 build in a few days.

So, If my portsdown is working OK. Should the advice still be "don't update" as said in another post ?
or, is it ok, to update ? ( I do like the new features that come along though your Dev work )

Last thing i want is to have to rebuild the sd , or have the need to SSH to fix things

Yes, it is safe to update, but if you already have version 202007012 (check on Menu 2, Info) there is nothing to be gained. If you have an earlier version (lower number) you would get some new features.
