Static IP Address

Post by M0PIT » Mon Sep 02, 2019 7:16 pm

Hi,

For the past few days I've successfully been streaming from OBS on Linux, into Portsdown, but on several occasions the Pi has been issued a different IP address from the DHCP server, this has meant that I had to re-edit the OBS batch file with the new IP address. So rather than setup a static address on the DHCP server, I decided to add one to the Portsdown Pi and I added the static address to the 'cmdline.txt' file and rebooted Portsdown.

I found that the new static address didn't work even though I had amended the OBS batch file, however I could ping it and it did work using SSH, then I found that there were two addresses bound to the Pi's NIC, the static address and a DHCP issued address. It appears that the DHCP address would always work with OBS, but the static address didn't, this is possibly due to having two IP addresses on the one NIC?

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and is there way of stopping DHCP on the Pi and forcing it to only have a static IP address?

Disable WiFi and use a wired connection, and it should work.

I doubt it is connecting via WiFi as Phil would have had to set up the security for that to work, unless he is running WiFi without security, which would be bad. OBS UDP and WiFi is not a good combination.

The best option is to use a router with DHCP that retains the same IP address for the same MAC address. Hard configuring it on the PI is asking for trouble next time it is takes somewhere with a different network setup. It's not that hard to configure a router, if it is too hard, replace the router for one that isn't as hard to configure.

Hi Mike,

No I'm not using wi-fi it's ethernet, I just want to configure a static IP address so I can use it on my home network that has a DHCP server and also use it out in the field where there will not be a DHCP server.

The PC has a static address and I would like the Portsdown to have a static address too, that way I can use them both on my home network and out in the field with out the need to reconfigure both the PC and Portsdown every time there location changes.
