Bob

I'm not sure that I understand you. If you can see the menu on the LCD, the Pi must have booted up.

In normal operation, you never see the files loading.

If there is a menu on on the LCD, and you log in using a computer over the network, what do you see on the computer screen?

If you end up at the Linux command prompt, and don't know where you are, enter

Code: Select all

/home/pi/rpidatv/scripts/menu.sh menu
. Option 8 then Option 4 will restore the touchscreen. To set what happens on power-up and boot up got to Option 5 (System Setup) and Autostart.

Dave,

When the Pi boots I get a black screen with nothing showing on the LCD. I login to the Pi "blind" and things work as they should. My question, is this normal or have I done something wrong.

Hi Bob

When you say log-in blind, what do you mean? Are you using Putty or a similar SSH client to log-in over the network?

If so, you should see the Portsdown menu on the SSH Client. Once you get that Menu, you can go to setup, auto start, and configure how the RPi starts so that you only ever need to log in to change advanced settings.

1.I turn off the pi
2. Connect keyboard
3. Power up the pi
4. Screen is black
5. enter the necessary log-in stuff "user pi" "Password raspberry" even though nothing showing on the screen
6. Get BATC logo

Hope that make more sense than my previous posts. It's hard to make it clear using email sometimes.

Bob,

there is no console login via the lcd screen. You need to login via putty from another connected computer as per instructions. What your seeing on lcd is normally hidden hence the no monitor/keyboard to be connected. If you log in via putty you will get menu on computer to enable you to setup lcd and touchscreen.

Thanks Dave, I didn't have the LCD selected as the option at boot up. The Pi now goes straight to the menu screen. Since I'm in the US I'm finding that we probably aren't going to be able to use the menu as it is now because our repeater is setup to use different symbol rates and PIDs that can't be selected with the software as is. For example, trying to set the frequency to 1292.5, our TX frequency, the system never changes the menu options on the screen even though during setup it showed in line 0. I've rebooted thinking that was the issue but no success.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Bob

If you set the frequency and symbol rate in the computer console, they stay set, even though none of the buttons on the Touchscreen highlighted. I hope to be able to change the buttons in a few weeks.

You can select transmit and standby on the touchscreen as long as you don't select the frequency and SR on there.

Hope that helps

Hi Dave G8GKQ,

I have a question about the WaveShare SpotPear 3.5inch Touch Screen for Portsdown project.

I noticed on the WaveShare website that they sell two models:

"3.5inch RPi LCD (A) and 3.5inch RPi LCD (B) are hardware compatible with each other (uses different driver), and can be mutually substituted in most cases. (A) for low cost ver. while (B) for IPS ver. with better displaying."

The price is similar between "A" and "B"...but, WaveShare says drivers are different. Your photo in posting shows the "A" model. Am I restricted to "A" Touch Screen??

Hi Ken

Please purchase a Type A screen. The 3 screens that I use for testing are all Type A, so I have no idea how the Type B will perform.

Does anybody else have experience with the Type B or any Waveshare clones?

I have gathered everything I need to start set-up on my Portsdown/RPi3/DATV-Express transmitter, except that I am still waiting for the BATC preprogramed-SD to arrive here in the US.

I do have a question about mounting the WaveShare SpotPear 3.5inch Touch Screen. What I see (no extender card planned) is that the LCD display is only mounted and supported by the dual-row RPi3 GPIO connector pins. The screen is cantilevered from the connector and does NOT appear mechanically sturdy?? I do NOT see any holes in LCD unit for mounting the LDC to a bracket or even to the RPi3 board for "extra mechanical support"??

With my "heavy fingers" I don't like the idea of flexing the GPIO connector pins when I touch the screen.

How do most Portsdown users mount the WaveShare SpotPear 3.5inch Touch Screen to their Portsdown cabinet or bracket????
