RTL Dongles and SDRplay RSP

Post by radiogareth » Sat Oct 08, 2016 10:02 am

Given that both the above units are designed to receive DTV I'm puzzled why they haven't been adapted to receive reduced bandwidth amateur signals. They both cover 6m-23cm and the RSP is an outstanding piece of kit. Commercial software drivers exist for both (they both work fine for Freeview).
I regret that writing or modifying the software is totally outside any of my capabilities, but given the efforts being poured into RPi software and complete standalone solutions it seems a bit like reinventing the wheel? No offence intended for all the sterling development work but 'Its in vain to do with more, that which can be done with less'. Am I missing something??

I did speak to the SDRPlay folks a while ago and they reckoned their TV software libraries could be
used to decode reduced bandwidth TV (at least for DVB-T).

The problem is that SDRPlay are not the people that do the TV software that is Mirics http://www.mirics.com/node/6 and the
conversation sort of petered out mainly as Mirics wouldn't talk to me once they figured out I was not going to sell millions of their chips.
I tried to get hold of one of their development kits but they don't seem to make those any longer.

I am too busy to follow it up with SDRPlay who are the people I was refereed back to by Mirics.

As for the RTL Dongle there is always the excellent leandvb

OK, I sort of guessed that. But a market is still a market. SDRPlay have passed on my request but it may well end up in the same pile as yours :-(

I'll have a look at the lean software, thanks.

I look at Myrics datasheet...It seems that :
- Support several TV modes (DVB-T and DVB-C) but not DVB-S
- No open drivers neither full datasheet with registers
- Even for SDR, Myrics provides only an API and not the source code : means that it is compiled for specific plateform and Linux Kernel
Conclusion : no way (and specially as Charles said, Myrics doesn't want to provide support or information).

Even with source code I doubt that decoding a reduced bandwidth in DVB-T(1MHZ) could be possible as it is not a standard norm.

For RB specially on DVB-S, try leandvb. I made a graphical interface for Raspberry : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DVgLVcz9Vc
Next step could be to use a better SDR : Airpsy or SDRPLay as input for a better SNR.
