When the Portsdown 5 appears, can we have 1920 * 1080p @ 60Hz output on the HDMI when in 'console' mode? or even the second HDMI output when the screen is used as the control interface. Using a Portsdown 4 as a Ryde, the output is only 800 * 480p.
As you can probably tell I use GB3NQ which is pushing out 1920 * 1080p HD (most of the time) with a 360p signal as well.

I did try switching my system to 4K for a test using the same bandwidth as HD. Receiving was via a set top sat box. It works but with a lower frame rate. After all it is just data as far as the Pluto is concerned. (this was not through the repeater!)

High Definition HDMI from a Portsdown 4

Post by G8GKQ » Fri Nov 08, 2024 10:57 am

Martin G8LCE requested that the Portsdown 5 be able to output 1920x1080 HDMI video when used as a receiver.

This feature is already implemented in the Portsdown 4, BUT it only works if you have no touchscreen connected.

Martin mentions SSH console control. This is no longer a supported option. There are 2 ways to control a Portsdown 4 without a touchscreen:
  • Use the web interface. Point your browser at the Portsdown's IP address and then use the mouse in the browser to click on the buttons. This works for all the Portsdown family of tools including BandViewer and the test equipment suite.
  • More experimentally, I have added the facility to connect a USB mouse directly to the Portsdown. You can then see a mouse pointer on the HDMI screen and use it to control the Portsdown transmitter and receiver. There are some minor (visual) glitches, but it is quite usable. This facility has not yet been implemented in BandViewer or the Portsdown test equipment, so of you click those you end up in a dead end (recover using the browser interface). Note that the mouse pointer is not visible when displaying a received picture, but the mouse is still functional.
Please provide any bug reports on these features here.

Dave, I think you will find he output from the HDMI of a Portsdown when in console mode is 480p. I checked by copy/paste the image from the windows screen and it shows 1600 by 960 but a monitor shows 480p. The same happens if the Portsdown is used as a Ryde or Ryde mode. I have not changed the config file but would making the HDMI output 'hdmi_group=1 hdmi_mode=16' change things?

One other thing I think might be useful for the Portsdown 5 might be a caption input from a connected keyboard. For example you could display your callsign and locator by typing and then hit a function key to display it along the lower part of the screen (like subtitles). If it was possible it would then find other uses as people tried it out.
