I'm wondering if a good application of Allstar would be to add it to a repeater that has a streaming input (or output) to provide a talkback facility for remote stations who may be watching - maybe it has already been done?
If so could a repeater be given an Allstar node and just sit and listen on a specific talkgroup (?), and if how quickly can a user connect and disconnect - they would only transmit on Allstar as they would listen on the repeater stream where the Allstar could be mixed with normal FM talkback.
So would it work and if so I'll have a go at implementing on GB3HV...

For Pi6MEP i am working on one raspberry 4B setup running up to 10 nodes.
Were node 0 is for conversion or chat box idea.
Node 1 is connected to the audio channel of the datv i/o
Node 2 is connected to a 2M FM channel.
Node3 is connected to a 70cm FM channel
Node4 is android input channel via DVswitch
node 5 is Echolink input
node 6 is .....
node 7 etc...
Nice thing is the posibility to connect muliple channels on users request.
Or make it fixed all to the wishes of the repeater manager.
So you as a repeater manager can give the user options to use a connect or disconnect commands.
It works with 1 allstar account and 1node number giving you the online option to add 1 digit extra eg.0-9
I now have 62992 node going from 629920 to 629929..
I even think a ryde raspberry can house the allstar node.
But i need to test that so you might be better off using a dedicated raspberry for your first setup.
You only have to get some modem fobs and connect it all to internet.
you can connect multiple usb audio fob to 1 raspberry.
By the way. the first 5 allstar modem pcb's i made are working.
Version 2 is in production with some error corrections.
i made it available on my google drive.

What if you would setup a temporaire allstar hotspot repeater using a baofeng, raspberry 3 or better and a internet connection via a 3g hotspot somewhere where you still have cell coverage...g8gtz wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 3:45 pmInteresting topic but....
It doesn't solve the problem of reliable talkback when out operating portable (same problem exists for microwaves).
For this we need a solution that does NOT need a reliable 4G signal to provide the internet connection - this is a major (impossible to solve) problem when operating from a hilltop and prevents Zello, Whatsapp, Dxspot and ON4KST from working reliably.
One possible answer that I have been musing over is the use of the 70cms DMR repeater network to provide a way to access an agreed Microave / TV talkback talkgroup - As a result of attending a lecture at the RSGB convention I have even splashed out on a £42 DMR handset (Baufeng DM1701).
However it seems there is not one flavour of DMR repeater and different network have different policies on setting up access to different talkgroups.
So if Allstar can fix this one, then it's a winner!! In the meantime I'll keep investigating as I do think it could be the answer to solving the talkback problem....

I think when a station is transmitting talk back traffic should be kept to a minimum and avoid having a QSO between other users. Just ask a question and wait for the stream to catch up and reply. Please do not use the Allstar talkback channel to put off the transmitting station. This is a useful addition to a repeater if used properly. Look forward to a useful protocol developing.

I think the main problem is the Allstar audio it is being fed back on the repeater audio so far ahead of the person transmitting hearing it (actually the 2m audio is the same). It probably should not be done like that, a delay is needed in the repeater so all audio inputs are temporally synced. We also need to minimise that delay* somehow. You don't get such long delays on Zoom etc. so I wonder what is causing it?

I will be doing some upgrades to the DATV TALKBACK NODE 47572
This is an upgrade to the Raspberry Pi and power supply.
It will be done over the next couple of days.
Outages will be kept to a minimum.
I will reconnect back to as many stations as I can after any outage.
