USB Microphone For Buster 2020

Post by G0LJF » Thu Sep 03, 2020 1:06 pm

Hello,

I have been using a Trust USB Mic with Portsdown 2020 Buster [latest] fine.
This is reported as Set [C-Media USB Headphone Set], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio].

I now have a Urage one too from CPC (works fine with this PC)

https://cpc.farnell.com/hama/00186017/m ... dp/CS33608

This is reported by P. as Device [USB PnP Sound Device], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]

and this is listed as the device type that works here https://wiki.batc.org.uk/Audio_Device_List

But it produces no sound. I tried swapping them over twice.

Please, any ideas about compatibility with P. Buster and how to fix this.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike

The Portsdown has changed a bit since that Wiki page was written. I could spend a month re-writing the Wiki and it would still be out of date!

Anyway, please could you try the following Linux commands and paste the results here:

Code: Select all

arecord -l
and

Code: Select all

arecord -f S16_LE -r 60000 -D hw:2,0 -d 5 testS16_LE.wav
If the card number for your microphone reported in the first test is 1, please substitute hw:1,0 for hw:2,0 in the second test.

I'm looking for results something like this:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 1: usbtv [usbtv], device 0: USBTV Audio [USBTV Audio Input]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: Device [USB Audio Device], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ arecord -f S16_LE -r 60000 -D hw:2,0 -d 5 testS16_LE.wav
Recording WAVE 'testS16_LE.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 60000 Hz, Mono
Warning: rate is not accurate (requested = 60000Hz, got = 48000Hz)
         please, try the plug plugin
Thanks

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. Now you probably aren't going to be very happy with me... but it DOES work fine now.

I am sorry to put in a Red Herring here. However my P. was not Tx earlier and I have been also messing with the SKY 65135 I use as a PA driver (a tip for anyone who needs a 30dbm linear driver, look on eBay).

I did try it twice and there was no sound.

So thanks again, and if nothing else, this also adds one more known working model of Microphone to the list.

Ta, 73,

Mike

Glad to help out.

I fixed mine to the 13cm 8W switch board SMA F output using an SMA M-M adapter.
I also wired the Enable input to the P. PTT on board Toshiba switch via a 10K (otherwise you may get unwanted high level RF at the wrong moment). You will need to apply +5V to this pin (its a MOSFET power switch I think) in order to power up the internal three PA stages.
