There should be no problem Peter. You're line of sight to the Merryton loops (IO93AD75) and slightly obstructed to Buxton (IO93AF63).

An interesting day, if a little underwhelming.... The promised tropo did not materialise, not many station were about and I need to do a bench check on my 146 rx as it did not seem to be as lively as normal.

On 146.5 I worked M0SKM, G4CPE and G0WFT from the Luton area but failed to rx Mike G0MJW and only managed a 1 way to GW8VPG using 125 Ks but it was 176 Kms. Shaun was reasonably strong on .750 and I think the contact proved that if the path is not true line of sight, it is unlikely to work for DVB-S due to multipath. Shaun only saw my signals for about 10 seconds, probably due to aircraft scatter.

I missed G8DKC and ran out of time to work Mike G8LES. Also failed with Brian G4EWJ on Merryton Low on 437.

On the upside, it was good to chat with Phil G8XTW who visited and the use of an rfexplorer displayed on a pipo proved to be an excellent spectrum monitor both to look for the wanted signals but also to monitor for interference - must be the first time Martin Lynch has sold anything useful for ATVers!

I won't be on for the September activity day but am planning a trip to Clee or Long Mynd in Shropshire on Saturday 3rd September.

Thanks to everyone who came on.

This Saturdays site top of the top M42 is clear take off for miles, Noel was fully readable on 750 but not hearing reply.

Nothing from Shaun and Co, but this was a test day for me with the logistics of Yagi swap over and kit,
suggested to Christine XYL a Transit would be useful, that went down well :-)

Tx'ed to Brian on 437 but he was getting me better on side lobes and back of Yagi, we were not LOS but,
Yagi change under way, for test purposes you understand.

I received him D5 on 23cms after some Ae tweaking with standard Sat Rx 4m/s.

Also Brian and myself were intermittently suffering with 144.750 Rx problems for some reason 5-9 and then,
as if attenuator suddenly switched in.

Didn't get a chance to Rx on 146.5, but kit all plumbed in and worked.

Anyway we had a good day out, look forward to September.

Not the best of days.

After a two hour drive, G6NOI and I arrived at our first site below the eastern side of Axe Edge near Buxton to find the horizon missing. It looked fine on Google Streetview, but the combination of being less tall than their camera and on the other side of the road put a hump in the way. We carried on in the hope that the 12ft mast would enable the beam to see over the hump.

I had completed the 2m tx a few days earlier and that was the first thing to try. Unfortunately there was little chance of the 2m beam seeing over the hump, as it transpired that while re-packing the car at G6NOI's, I had left the 2m beam on a grass verge outside his house. Fortunately a call home found it still there. I contemplated throwing myself in front of one of the several Ferraris whizzing up and down the road, but the feeling passed.

We received G8DKC/P east of Tamworth on 70cm, but the signal was dropping in and out. It seemed best when he was beaming away from us! He received us on D5 on 23cm. There seemed to be QRM on both 2m and 70cm in our vicinity.

We had spoken to M0DTS/P on 2m earlier, but couldn't raise him, so we headed to our second site at Merryton Low near Leek. We failed to receive G8GTZ/P and G4CPE on Dunstable downs on 70cm RB-TV, but it was very close, with frequent locking. We heard M0SKM, but couldn't raise him.

We had arranged a 10GHz test with G1LWX/P near Wigan, from the Cat and Fiddle pub (now closed) high on the A537 (the UK's most dangerous road) but he found his primary site barred and was chased off his secondary site.

Brian G6AUR & myself went to the Blorenge Mountain, between Blaenavon & Abergavenny, on the Saturday. Our hope was to work Noel at Dunstable Downs. When we arrived on site, it was quite windy and we had to restrict the aerial height and put windproof coats on! Conditions were flat, with talkback to Noel at times full scale and then going almost into the noise. The Blorenge has a fabulous take off to the East from a height of 515m;

The picture above shows the view to the East, with the beams pointing North. We were able to receive a picture from Noel on 146.5MHz, 125ks/s, at a distance of 176km, but unfortunately he was not able to see us, despite running very similar transmitters and aerials etc.

We did not have picture lock for long periods and I suspect aircraft reflections might have played a part. However, along the same beam heading, we were able to achieve a two way QSO on 2m with Mike M0MJW at Harwell.
After lunch we had an interesting and long two way QSO on 437MHz with Mike G8LES at Alton. He was a very strong signal running 400W at 2Ms/s. We were able to run 30-35W and worked him on all symbol rates from 2Ms/s down to 125ks/s. It was an interesting exercise to go through the various symbol rates and Mike reported that 1Ms/s H264 was a good compromise between picture quality and signal resilience.
We turned the beams North and called several times, but did not hear anything from that direction.
We will make an effort to be out to work Noel on 3rd September; I think we will have to look at path plots and choose a site carefully.
