Hunting through ebay I found an MP1584 adjustable buck converter. It's rated 0.8-20V @ 3A with claimed 30mV ripple - switching at 1mHz. Not expensive!
I wonder if this would be a suitable alternative?
I have the tuner and USB modules so fairly keen to get the build under way...

I've been testing those MP1584 modules and they're not completely satisfactory.
At 1.15v open circuit, the voltage goes up to 1.48v at a current of 0.5A and up to 1.58v at 1A. It's better at 3.30v open circuit, where 1.6A takes it up to 3.48v. It gets extremely hot at the latter. It's only tiny, so sticking it to a ground plane with heat paste would help.

It's pretty good at 3.3v 1.1A, where there's no change bewtween load on and off. The module is not too hot to hold for a few seconds. 5v 1.25A is similar.
It seems like they may be OK for 3.3v-5v at 1A, but having seen what they can do and being a previously unknown quantity, I'm sticking with the LM2596 modules followed by a linear regulator.

The last version of Minitioune can work also at very High SR.
here is an example at SR25000 TS rate is about 35 Mbps, Minitiouner and USB interface can run it . Consumption is 680 mA at this rate.
( max conso of 1.8A is done for DVB-S2 at 45 MS/s)
so for DVB-S at any SR, I think that the LP3879 will be sufficient.
TSreader receiving the TS via UDP at same time than VLC show that there is no CRC errors no lost of SYNC...
yes the Minitiouner can work at high SR.
This last version of Minitioune ( v0.1f) will be available soon for download.

I found that with the STB0899 it is when the DVB-S2 core is enabled that the current really shoots up.
The DVB-S logic took less than 200 mA.

The 0899 uses 3v3 2v5 (internally generated) and 1v8
and it is the 1v8 logic core supply that goes up when S2 is enabled.
All the ST chips seem to come from the same family so I expect the BATC NIM
will behave in a similar way.
Programming the S2 part of the chip is a lot more complex than the S part
(there are an awful lot more registers to set up).

I have today completed my USB tuner and the hardware seems OK, I have the correct supply rail voltages and the heatsink on the 5V & 3.3V regulators is comfortably warm. I thought that I had loaded the correct drivers, but when I try to run MiniTuione on my Windows 8.1 PC, I get;
Get FTDeviceSerialNo - Device not opened (twice)
FT_OpenA_Device not opened
FT_GetDriverVersion-Invalid handle
FTDI USB driver too old
I have used the driver removal tool, entered 6010 for the device type, and it finds and removes the driver.
I then used the certified driver installation tool which installs the drivers.
When I plug in the tuner, Windows thinks for a minute or so and install the drivers.
When I check under device manager, the driver serial number is the correct one, 2.12.0.0.
When I try to run Minituione, I get the same errors as above and have to use task manager to close it down.
It would be good to try and manually update the drivers, but FTDI do not seem to offer the drivers as files, just an installer which puts them who knows where to try and browse to.
Has anyone got this to work on Windows 8.1?

I have it running on Windows 8.1 64bit version.
Maybe try a different USB cable or another USB socket as a quick test.
Download the latest FT_prog and have a look at it, to se if its setup correctly

As Colin suggests use FT Prog to check the FT2232.
On one of my builds the Pc detected the module and installed drivers.
But the tuner software wouldnt run as yours.
Running FT Prog didnt show the module. turned out to be a short on one of the ft2232 pins on the veroboard.
couldn't see one on inspection but it came to life after running a stanley knife down all the tracks.
