Portsdown 4 & Picotuner

Post by M1ASR » Mon Jan 12, 2026 2:25 pm

Good afternoon. I have 3 Portsdown 4's and my Picotuner works fine on one of them. It also works on Opentuner, however it is not recognised by my other 2 Portsdowns. Any ideas, the PD4's work normally in all other aspects.

Kind regards

Update!

Problem cured by plugging another dongle (Audio) into PD4. Works fine now, no idea why, something going on in USB Bus I guess.

I have to leave the Audio Dongle plugged into the RPi, for the Picotuner to be recognised on boot up. Work around for now, but wonder what's going on?

Perhaps you have the dongle selected for audio out ?

I've tried with rpi and HDMI selected with the same result. I'm assuming it needs some device connected, or it won't be recognised. I wanted just monitor video, it appears to be an issue. As soon as I plug the audio dongle in, the PIcotuner is immediately recognised.

I don't have the same issue. so it is something different. Did you try setting no audio?

Yes tried no audio, seems an issue on all 3 PD4's - Picotuner only works with usb audio dongle. wonder if I need to update firmware?

Update: Purchased a "White Dongle" to no avail.

PD receives and streams sound, but freezes after about 15 secs. The original white dongle isn't available it seems, as I notice that there is a red flashing light in the dongle case when streaming. Picotuner works fine on Laptop/PC and the sound is fine. I've also swapped the usb lead.

For Dave G8GKQ

The Portsdown is just a fantastic piece of kit!

We use it to test transmission and resception of the ISS HamTV downlink with our system...via PicoTuner on the receive end.

We want to make the ISS HamTV RX Merger be a power on auto start. We have figured out the comand to do it, the scripting is stumping us right now.

So Merger has to autostart as well as RX.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Mike
