AllScan UCI120 as alternative to USB Audio adapter

Post by DL9SDL » Mon Feb 09, 2026 9:39 am

Hi experts,
I have running a basic stand alone system V2, inspired by Tech Minds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DXZr-3HfnI

He is showing in his tutorial part 2 a very nice device called AllScan UCI120 USB Communications Interface.
To integrate this device it seems to be very easy an in deed ist is.
Now the issue: When I press the PTT at the ALINCO Mike, a small text pattern appears at the very lower part of the screen. After some sequences with PTT it fills up the entire scree.
Do I need to change something in the configuration/driver like this ?

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1b3f:2008 Generalplus Technology Inc.
pi@raspberrypi:~ $

Would be very helpful to get some hints, otherwise I have to go back to the standard audio USB adapter.
Regards

Full support for the PTT of the UC120 is only available in Langstone V3. It is not available in V2.

The character you see appearing on the screen happens because the Operating system sees the UC120 PTT as a keyboard press and echos it to the screen.

You can disable the echo by editing /home/pi/.bashrc and adding the line below just before the Langstone/run command

Code: Select all

stty -echo -icanon
This is done by default on the Langstone V3 Installation.

Doing the above will prevent the screen corruption however the UC120 PTT will still not work as it is not included in the Langstone V2 build.

Hi Colin,
thanks for the quick reply.
I will upgrade to V3. How to do it in the best way ?
I tried it 3 month ago from github to prepare a SD card with V3 but I did not succeed. Please give me the link to download to V3.

Kind regards

Langstone V3 really needs a fresh install on a Pi5. Some people have run it on a Pi4 but this is not supported.

The installation instructions are in the normal location .

Hi Colin,
now I tried to prepare a RPi5.
I did the image with the updated Raspberry Imager and followed step by step your instruction for V3 from github.
What is now new, that at the 7" V1-display appears a message window to enter a new username. Connecting by SSH via Putty the access is refused. Something has changed in the last few month on the procedure to load the SD-card with the operating system. Is there a difference to the installation of Langstone V2 on a Pi4 ?
Sorry for bothering you.
Kind regards and 73, Helmut

That SSH change password warning / nag screen in the gui has always happened. To disable it. Google "Disable PI SSH password change warning" to learn how.

However, I don't recall there being a change user name warning so that's new. PI developers seem to think they know more than the user about how the user wishes to operate their hardware, but I am wondering if you have downloaded the correct OS version? Also I would avoid the latest updated RPI imager, I know Colin recommends it, but that updates far too often and who knows what gets broken when that happens. E.g. demands for a new user name policies being introduced without warning. Stick with what we know works.

It goes without saying, don't expect non-standard hardware to work, even if someone else has randomly got it to work, usually it is not supported and if that is the case, you will be on your own.

It sounds like something might have changed again. It's getting to be a common occurrence.

I am busy today but i will try to check it out tomorrow.

If you are being asked to change the user name then do it and give it a try, in theory, the latest build should work with any user name, but I haven't fully tested it.

I am seriously beginning to think that an image of a fully working system might now be a better way of installing and would avoid these changes. I will investigate that as an option.

I just checked - the new imager is riddled with bugs, https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-imager/issues destroys SD cards, not setting SSH, Wifi issues etc. etc. It should never have been released like that. The recommendation seems to be to use the latest 1.9 rather than 2.0.
