HDMI switcher recommendation

Post by G4WIM » Sun Aug 03, 2025 10:55 am

Hi Guys
I'm looking for a HDMI switcher which won't mess up a subsequent H265 Chinese encoder.
From what I've read the ATEM mini Pro looks as though it would work ok but is somewhat overkill as many of its features would not be used.
I currently have a cheap 5 way switch under IR control but when it switches it takes the H265 encoder about 5 seconds to recover - less than ideal !

Any ideas / suggestions ?

Thanks Tim

ATEN VanCryst VS0801H 8-Port HDMI Switch has been used in GB3NQ after other ones caused various problems with HDMI to encoder.
There is also a 4K version.

You should be able to find it cheaper but this is identical to the one i use with my H265 Encoder Box Tx:

We used Aten VanCryst too on VK5RDC
viewtopic.php?f=82&t=7750&p=29581&hilit=aten#p29581
It sees the first active input and goes to it (Rpi test pattern which is left on all the time in our case)

The front panel buttons can be wired in paralell with open collectors that pull them to earth for remote switching
There is RS232 control as well

If you have trouble with stability sometimes a Hdmi Edid Emulator Passthrough does the trick
Try using a Fueran hdmi passthrough (or similar) for troublesome devices
If you can unify all your HDMI resolutions that you are switching, that may also help

Hi Tim

These https://www.amazon.co.uk/Multiviewer-PO ... 0CPXNQX8Z/ are used in GB3EY and at least one other ATV repeater that I know of.

The Portta seamless switch suggested by Clive is used in GB3HV and in the development rig for the BATC DATV Repeater Controller project with good results.

Hi guys

as ever thanks again for your suggestions. I've ordered a 1080 Portta 4 way switch from Amazon, a good price and not much more expensive than my existing 'glitchy' device.

Also ordered an analog to HDMI converter for £8.99 - was going to use a BATC USB video dongle and RPI but for £8.99 worth a punt !

I'll report back on how I get on with these devices.

The hdmi switch arrived less than 12 hours after ordering !
Seems to work very nicely, so now just going to edit the repeater controller config file.
Not had time to evaluate the analog to hdmi converter.
Thanks for the pointers.
Regards Tim
