Re: Signal received in Waltham NE lincolnshire
Good to see that you've received EY, Roger. Did you get to the bottom of what was causing your earlier problems?
The propagation tools suggested that you should be able to receive it there with a modest set up comprising of12dBi antenna at 8m AGL and 3dB feeder loss that would give you 8.5 microvolts. That's ample.

Re: Signal received in Waltham NE lincolnshire
no only difference is have a preamp in the shack ( soon to go mast head with new coax). antenna is a sevenside ATV antenna (appears to be no balun on it. trying to get info if their should be one ). Reception is very sporadic. Its only towards dusk i start getting signal . I know of 2 other stations near me but closer to the site have higher and bigger antenna and they cant get signal. one of them is directly between me and EY
I smashed my knee on side of desk when i saw last night i manged to get a signal lock and picture.( i turned around too quick)
the preamp is an old Camtech LNA 2001 circa 1992 by G8KBC

Re: Signal received in Waltham NE lincolnshire
Masthead preamp is essential, especially with antennas like the Severnside, as they are made of cheap domestic TV aerial components. It's not surprising that their gain is only around 10dB over a dipole, about the same a a normal Group A aerial for Belmont. You'd probably get better results from a stacked and bayed dipole array; a design was in CQ-TV a long time ago if you don't want to fork out for a commercial antenna. Ken G8VDP uses one from Barnsley to get into EY.
They don't have a balun and the method of connecting the feeder is not good enough for 1.3GHz. I've experimented with a coaxial 1:1 balun on mine made of RG402 and got a reasonable match but the screw terminals are more suited to Topband than 23cms. However, I found that an Alford Slot out-performed the Severnside so I didn't pursue that path in my search for a look-through antenna.

This is strange one for the wizards of the dark art of propagation.
no change to system or beam heading gone from an intermittent mer4 .2 need 4.2 and decodes.
to mer5 signal stronger the darker the night
perhaps its sneaking across the Humber bridge in the dark lol

Re: Signal received in Waltham NE lincolnshire
I have been surprised by the extent to which the local weather affects propagation on 23cms.
Some days I can get into EY with just 300 microwatts but sometimes it can take a milliwatt, especially when it's dank and misty.
I didn't notice this in the days of FM ATV. Probably because the digital cliff makes the small changes much more noticeable.

Re: Signal received in Waltham NE lincolnshire
not been able to recieve past few days. Poss wether conditions. I could not receive this morning before upgrade to antenna system.
move preamp from shack to mast head also replaced cable run with new hdf400 24m length
hdf400
pre- amp was given to me. It was made in 2001 poss CAMTECH
1500MHz - 0.168dB/m
24meter x 0.168 = 4.032dB loss dont know gain of amp or antenna( poss a sevenside antenna )
