Re: Es HailSat 2 location
Hi Noel
Apologies if this should be obvious, but in the SDR setup you mention for picking up the beacon is anything other than a bias tee needed at 12v for the LNB?
I think I am picking up the Arabic channel ok on the STB

Re: Es HailSat 2 location
Nothing else required - the 10706MHz beacon is Vertical polarised so only needs 12v feed to the LNB and then it can be found at 956MHz plus / minus your LNB frequency error but you should see it on an RTL dongle in SDR# with a 2MHz span.
Typical reports indicate it is 25 - 30 dB above the noise .

Re: Es HailSat 2 location
Useful note forwarded by Graham G3VZV that beacon frequencies are not exclusive to a satellite:
To assure you're receiving Es'hail-2 the following may give guidance. Es'hail-2 has two TT&C beacons on 10706 and 11205 MHz.
When you receive BOTH beacons (without having to turn the dish) with similar signal strenghts (+/- 5 dB) then you aimed your dish correctly at the 25.8°East Es'hail-2 slot.
When you only receive (a) 10706 beacon(s) and NOT the 11205 beacon you are pointing to ArabSat 5A 30.5° East.
When you only receive a 11205 beacon and NOT the 10706 beacon, you are pointing to Astra 1KR 19.2° East.

Re: Es HailSat 2 location
I thank the gods of house purchase from 25 years ago. I have a ground level accessible brick wall with this line of sight over my single story kitchen/garage extension.
Gareth
I have an old Bob Platts LNB with a 0.6 NF and a 9.0GHz dro, along with a 65cm Maspro solid offset dish, also an Octagon PLL dual output to try. This gives an nice short run of coax/cables to the shack and also the opportunity to mount a bigger dish for uplink some day. I have a 40 element Loop-yagi gifted from a friend who used to use it for the Oscars. Will that better a 1M dish I wonder?Gareth
Re: Es HailSat 2 location
Well I have fitted my octagon to my offset dish and pointed in what I think is the correct direction...
As I adjust the elevation the noise level goes up considerably 15dB or so on 956MHz as I point skyward ..but no sign of any beacon?
Can someone tell me the frequency of one of the BADR channels, so that I can plug that into Minitune so that I can confirm that I am pointing in the
correct direction? I know that the system is working OK ...I think, as I can see local beacon GB3KBQ and also GB3SCX down on 619MHz.
I assume that I need to set SR4000 and MPeg2?
Many thanks
Adrian

Re: Es HailSat 2 location
I've lined up my dish using Euronews on 11996MHz H, 27,500KS/s, FEC 3/4, Vpid 5201, Apid 5203. With an Octagon OSLO on a 1m dish minitioune shows -30dBm and 8dB MER. Hope that helps.

...are you sure I can't use a pair of 813's?...

Adrian,
This really is a case of LMGTFY
For a start take a look at the getting ready to rx article in CQ-TV and try reading around the forum.
There is loads of information available....

You want to be looking at a transponder on Badr 4 choose one with a low FEC 3/4 it will be easier to lock on to,
https://www.lyngsat.com/Badr-4.html
11350 H 30000 is active on Es'hail- 2 @ 25.5°/25.8° East but hard to catch in the UK its on the MENA beam unless you have a large dish.

Adrian,
Have a look at CQ-TV 261 page 30 - I wrote a step by step guide giving you all the links listed above and a step by step guide to get it going.
I'm not convinced the Es'hail-2 beacon on 10706 (956 out of the LNB) will be strong enough to find it first off - the dedicated amatuer beacons when they are switched on should be.
