Very strong tropo this week - anyone takers?

Post by g8gtz » Mon Oct 22, 2018 5:58 pm

Looking at F5LEN and Hepburn both are showing very strong ducting on Tuesday / Wednesday particularly in the west.

We are away this week but staying near Cheltenham, which happens to be in the right area and there are one or two high spots around there. I had actually removed all the radio gear and bench out of the Land Rover ready for a none radio few days away!

Looking at the charts it should be possible to work Cumbria or Northern Ireland form there so the question is will anybody be able to get on and if so what band - I was thinking 5.6GHz?

I need to know before 10am tomorrow morning.

I would have loved a test from the lake district, but I am only free Tuesday and the forecast is for 40 to 55 MPH winds, so I'll have to dip out.

As an aside, I'm currently working on a lightweight setup that I can take mountain topping, so will be looking for Skeds. I'm also hoping to try out 6cm WBFM too.

I think you would need to be a bit further north than Cheltenham to make a trip south worthwhile. What is the distance we are aiming for now on 5.6GHz?

I'm limited by the fact I'm supposed to on a none radio break - Cleeve is only half an hour away :-)

Plan is go out to Cleeve common on Wednesday morning - hopefully GI7UGV and maybe G4EWJ will be around.

About 180Km I think (GI to Lake District), so looks like Cornwall and that would be great if John was out in NI - but it is a long way to go...

Looking at the maps, it maybe worth just hanging the dish out of the window at home!

I could get up to the Mendips on Wednesday morning with 5.6GHz, but we could work Cleeve Hill from there under flat conditions. We need to try and get some the operators up north or in GI to make it worthwhile. I think Penn Hill would be best for me, because the other site is where the 2m & 70cm repeaters are and they are likely to be open all day under these conditions.

Hi,

I can't get too far away due to work commitments today/tomorrow but I can manage tomorrow morning on 6cm at the nearby Scrabo Hill http://k7fry.com/grid/?qth=IO74DN49CF I do need to be back home sat at my desk at 2pm though!

I'd be on Zello or low power 2m if it suits.

Thats great. I can be on Penn Hill, Somerset, IO81QF, which is 305m asl. Zello channel ATV south and 2m talkback horizontal or vertical. Do you have a start time?

I'll probably miss most but I'm going to be out from ~3pm Wednesday from IO94MJ53 with good take off to SE thru south to SW, i could possibly do a little earlier....
QRV 146-24G, should have 750 and Zello talkback.

Lots of emailing between people today, but I think a summary of tomorrows proposed 5.6GHz activity is as follows;
11.00am; GI7UGV, G8GTZ & G8VPG on their portable sites.
Midday; G4EWJ at Winter Hill, moving to North Wales at 1.30pm for 3.00pm start. G4CPE monitoring from home (Luton).
3.00pm; M0DTS on site & G4EWJ on site in North Wales.
If anyone else is available, please post here and let us know. Lets hope the tropo does its duty as forecast! This morning G4KLB was working through GB3ZZ.
