5.6 GHz TV from Cornwall

Post by g8gtz » Fri Aug 31, 2018 6:03 am

Apologies for the very short notice but the idea only came to us last night.

You may be aware that we are currently at Goonhilly installing the Es'hailsat SDR receiver and doing some EME tests at the weekend - I also brought my 5665 gear thinking I would Martin G8LCE in Falmouth a signal whilst we are here.

The light bulb moment was when we realised we that GHY6 had a 5.7 GHz feed and I have an N type on my gear!

So there is a limited opportunity to work GB6GHY on 5665MHz on a 65 dB dish pointing your way! Unfortunately we are time limited and so this will have to be this afternoon (Friday) between approximately 1 and 4pm.

We are not sure how well this will work but has got to be worth a try - we can accurately point the dish at you but operating will have to be snappy as we won't have too much time and talk back will have to be via phone / text / zello as we only have a 144.750 mobile rig.

If interested, you will have to find a site with good take off to Cornwall (Mendips etc) and we look forward to working you.

Please spread the word and we look forward to working you....

I hope it's a clean signal with all that antenna gain!

I decided that this was an opportunity not to be missed and took the 5.6GHz kit to the Mendips at the site of GB3WR. Unfortunately mobile 'phone coverage was rather poor at this location, but luckily G4UVZ was on hand to act as an intermediary. I was not able to contact the team at Goonhilly, but had a good two way QSO with G4UVZ in Taunton.

I wonder what the beamwidth of the Goonhilly dish is at 5.6GHz?

That depends on what you mean by beamwidth, but at -3dB about 0.1 degrees, so pretty sharp!
