Info on ZETA 1000 wanted.

Post by G4HTZ » Fri Nov 27, 2015 5:46 pm

Just picked up as part of a ATV deal a ZETA 1000 satelitte RX in as new condition .
Can't seem to find any info on Internet about it apart from a few pictures .
Does anyone know what the 2 bandwith settings are on the back ..guessing 27 and 18 MHz ??
Seems to RX ok with a DG0VE pre amp at the antenna feedpoint on the 44 ele wimo .
Any information greatfully received
Thanks
Steve

Steve..

I have several Zeta 1000's and have a fair understanding about them.

The bandwidth switch just tightens up a 70mhz filter mounted piggy back on the tuner. I do not know the exact bandwidths but if you look at the 70mhz IF when the narrow position is selected you can see the difference. The preset pot on the PCB sets the actual narrow band width limit which I leave on minimum to get the maximum difference between the two switch settings.

Hope this helps

Steve.

What is the serial number of your Zeta? There seemed to be three batches of them made.

Steve..

You will be pleased to know that is from the last batch made. The best performer.

I have 5405 on 10ghz and 5466 on 13cm. Also one from the second batch on 24cm with another for portable. Love them..

The pot adjusts the voltage fed to a varicap diode.
With least volts on the diode it resonates the LF edge lower making the filter wider. With more volts on the diode the LF edge of the filter comes closer to 70mhz making the filter more narrow. Its a rather odd arrangement as the HF edge of the filter doesn't change.

Later tuner arrangements use SAW filters and 479mhz IF instead of 70mhz but the Zeta does give you the ability to add your own filter via the stubby phono connectors to further reduce the bandwidth. I have applied this to my Zeta on 10ghz to capture even weaker signals. You can make a really tight filter that looses the sound sub carrier and colour but then you can lock up four digit numbers on screen at much lower signal strengths.

Coincidentally just recently I have gone back to using WBFM on 10ghz and plan to experiment with filters less than 1mhz. too tight for video but who needs any more to capture 300 - 3000hz audio. There was a good article in CQ-TV 176 on this subject.. Perfect for a Zeta and little use to any later type Satellite RX.
