Starting from scratch with OBS

Now I'm getting to grips with actually transmitting to people, I find I want to do more with the Video side of the Hobby..
OBS has been recommended and I'm looking at this option, Having downloaded the OBS and installing. It does, to all imperps and tentences, seem to be working OK.

Apparently I needed to Install ffmpeg in order to stream and/or connect to the Portsdown.. So, some files (out of the long list at https://ffmpeg.org/) have been downloaded and extracted to a folder C:\ffmpeg... But copying them to a folder is not 'Installing' them (as per instructions on the BATC Wiki).

1:/ Where do I go from here?

You don't need to install FFMPEG. It's already part of the packages you'll be using, so remove it.

For the best results you need an Nvidia graphics card that supports NVENC. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_NVENC 6th gen or later chipsets preferred or you can use the Intel CPUs featuring the QuickSync integrated graphic controllers found in 8th gen processors. H265 12bit HEVC is supported in 10th gen processors or later. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video

Download OBS v27.2.4. It's not the latest version but can be found (amongst others) from this archive: https://www.filehorse.com/download-obs- ... /download/ and install it. Later versions will not work with the Virtual Camera below, so ignore any requests to upgrade to a newer version.

Download the Virtual Camera v2.05 plugin from here: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/ ... .949/[url][/url] The installer should find the OBS installation and place the files in the right place.

Download FreeStreamEncoder from here: http://www.vivadatv.org/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=1007. Create a folder in the root of your C: drive named F1EJP (C:\F1EJP) Copy the downloaded file to the new folder.

When you have got that far give me a shout.

Almost EVERYTHING you have said there is not what any of the Instructional Pages and Videos have said, Clive.. No wonder I'm struggling.. Although I have had Freestream loaded at one point, I then removed it as it wasn't mentioned in other instructions..

I did at one point get an OBS Logo on my VLC stream, but it never showed the Output from OBS...

2 days later though, that no longer 'works'.

I can see why the Forum thread laid dormant for so long despite the many viewers, this is so complicated and bespoke per machine, that it will take a genius (enter your good self) to have any chance of remote help..

Ah.. Intel (series 4) Mobile Chipset..

Let me Dig out the "Main PC" Fix it and see what the Graphics are.. I guess that will be well out of date too..

Looks like I'll have to return to Hardware solutions Clive, until funds are sufficient to update a PC or two..

It may be since lockdown and working from home but there does seem to be quite good value laptops on Ebay. I just bought

(Microsoft Surface Book 2 13 Inch i7 8650U GTX 1050 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Small Dent)
for £250. It works well with vMix HD once you get the right settings and has the GPU as well although only 2Gb (some programs require 3Gb GPU )
It has a small dent in it so was about half the price of others.
It shows that if you look at these things and check the specifications (from the model number etc. not the seller ) there may be bargains around that work for DATV.
Make sure you have a TPM if you want Windows 11 - and I think you should get the latest Windows to keep up to date.
With a Pluto on my network that is easy DATV.

I also bought a Yolobox Pro secondhand and that is very easy to use for feeding DATV once you get the hang of it but will only go down to 1Mb/s which is a pity. Works well as a mobile source for video and audio but really needs an Internet link for some things. The streaming from the Yolobox Pro to a networked Pluto does seem to be better than the computer with some sort of throttling of the feed when there are problems.

Down here in Cornwall we are pushing the limits of the HD repeater which is now H265 output. Try a rotating HD testcard and you soon learn a lot about streaming limits!
