Thanks for all the comments so far, but things have now gone from bad to worse.
Having noted Mike's screen grabs, I realised I was a bit behind with the firmware, so I installed the latest 0303 patch. Now I can't log in with ssh - even after deleting the current entry form known-hosts. However, the Pluto web page does confirm the update, so I've ordered one of those hardware encoders.
I should point out that I'm doing all this over the LAN.
During this, I was unable to execute...
wget https://api.github.com/repos/analogdevi ... ses/latest
...so I installed via the web page. Sorting this might take some time, but I'll be back.

Re: Talking to Pluto
When you update the firmware, some versions of SSH will recognise the machine is different. That might be your problem. I have just verified I can log in to my Pluto, root, analog. Try resetting the ssh client ?
Why have you ordered a hardware encoder? They work, actually quite well, not as well as a script at very low bit rates, but very acceptable, but you probably didn't need to spend 70 Euro on one.
