G8OZP LNB

Post by G4EFE » Tue Aug 25, 2015 7:42 am

First off: if anyone can't point me to a more appropriate place to ask the following questions, please do...

I've just rediscovered my G8OZP LNB and decided to fire it up (no dish) to see if I can hear any beacons. I'm in Reading.

With comms rx tuned to 1000 (10GHz) there's a healthy rise in noise. But when I tune up to 1368 (10368MHz) the noise level is minimal. So my first question is, is the LNB designed to provide coverage of our entire band, or only the bottom end?

Secondly, does anyone know how accurate these LNBs are? Spot on, within a couple of kHz or MHz?

Am l likely to heat anything with the LNBs merely facing out of the window, even if only via rain scatter?

Finally I'm ashamed to say I don't know what I'm listening for! Are 10GHz beacons FM or CW-type affairs.

Thanks for looking - Martin

Hi
I put into Google "using lnb for 10ghz " and loads of info came up .
Depending where you are located you may hear a beacon ...I can hear GB3PKT nr clacton sea on just a lnb into a funcube dongle ...beacon is about 30 miles away .

All beacons are horizontally polarised so you will proberly have to turn the lnb on its side .

There are videos on you tube showing people receiving 10ghz ATV on just a lnb

Hope that helps

Yes, thanks for that, Steve. I just ordered this from LNB from eBay..

I don't suppose my old G8OZP one will be PLL. Unfortunately, we don't seem to be that well served with beacons I can line up on, check calibration etc. The nearest seems to be GB3SEE at Reigate Hill, which is about 65km away.

Maybe rainscatter will provide a hit or two??

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch - Martin

Not many beacons but quite a few locals around Reading.

Activity around Reading? Interesting. Do you happen to have any more freq/mode/likely times-type info?

Hi Martin
The bob plats LNB won't be PLL
I can hear the beacon GB3SEE at 78km from here over a very obstructed path ..with a sky dish using a DB6NT transverter ...mount dish on its side for easier aiming .

GB3BH is on 10ghz on ATV ...so you might RX that ??

Re local activity to you I would suggest logging onto the ON4KST chat room under the microwave section ..there are quite a few stations active in IO91 square .there is a 10ghz contest Sunday 30th of August .

Regards
Steve

Thanks for your thoughts on this, Steve. Much appreciated. And mounting the dish on its side is not something I'd considered but sounds like a stroke of genius!

Just awaiting delivery of the Octagon LNB. I'll keep the G8OZP one for ATV reception, one sunny day...

Interesting - though not obvious where to get them.

I would prefer something with an integer MHz frequency translation to make the mental arithmetic easier. Given a 9.388 GHz LO is possible but not lower and the stock 27 MHz crystal gives 9.75 GHz or 10.6 GHz wouldn't aiming for 9.4 GHz from a 26.031 MHz crystal be a reasonable target?

The TT-1600 range is ~600MHz to 2.6 GHz which translates to 10.0GHz to 12.0 GHz, (and 10.819-12.819 GHz with the other LO). 10.368GHz would come out at 968 MHz or 148MHz.

Alternatively, a 9936MHz LO from a 27.515 MHz crystal would put 10368 MHz at 432MHz which might be useful for narrow band listening.
