5GHz antenna setup

Here is a question for you guys on putting up a receive antenna on 5 GHz for those who only have the budget for the FPV transceivers..
Should I go with a vertical, a halo, or a clover leaf on the repeater and is there a suitable budget (to start with) preamp for this?
Our terrain is far from ideal and our initial setup will require that I put this at my QTH in a 40' mast, shared with several other antennas.
