March 16/17th Activity Weekend

Post by M0DTS » Mon Mar 11, 2024 5:11 pm

Hi All,

I plan to be active on Sunday 17th with 2m from IO94LI (unfortunately I'm working Saturday)
I could do 4m at a push... but got to be worthwhile putting the big yagi up in the rain..

Maybe we can try have a good number of 2m stations on and hope for some dx?!

I'm planning 2 & 4 also subject to the weather, will aim to have 2m ready for Sunday as a minimum.

Well i WAS planning...even put the 4m beam on the pump-up mast...only to find that it didn't pump up any more. Leaking air from the lower joint, so suspect despite wrapping it up well for the winter, Mr Frost has paid it a visit :-(
I have contacted Hi-Lo (SMC) who made the mast (5 section/10m) regarding new seal kit(s) I may need so waiting to see what they come back with.
So shack-bound on saturday with just a tri-band co-linear to use or a QFH for 50.4MHz.....
Sunday I intend to go /P locally (Keston windmill so a reasonable takeoff over London to the North but not much else. Wx is looking reasonable as in no rain after 8am but negligible chances of any enhanced propagation.
Will do some local tests with Justin on 6m and 2m on the Saturday.
Gareth.

Perhaps an application for my spare 9m pump up... I am not around this weekend apart from Saturday, maybe if anyone is out.

Mike, Hopefully its just a seal, or a set of seals it needs. I have a spare 45' Clarke mast but is really far to heavy for me on my own. Getting it out of the shed is enough, let alone considering getting it vertical. Garden here isn't wide enough to safely guy it anyway...

The 'S E London contingent' had some fun today, initially me trying to run 51.7MHz DVB-T into my Meteor beacon RX antenna (it's a great match across 50MHz but a near hemispherical radiation pattern). I was using my Portsdown 4 into the Charon down-converter, then into a nice broadband amp I picked up a while back. Justin G8YTZ was not getting copy, despite decent wattage apparently going out. An interval while I looked at drive levels and signals...ugh- no wonder that did not work - more investigations needed..probably decent and tight band pass filters...so I swapped to my 'faulty' Lime Mini (only works when wrapped in bubble wrap and gets hot) and got a much cleaner TX, passing it through my very sharp 72MHz low pass to keep VHF FM clear. Signal received OK by Justin and was seen by Martin G4FKK who reported evidence of multi-pathing. Experiments continued onto 71MHz with Martin being received well by Justin (no 4m antennas up at home as my mast is U/S). We progressed to 146.5 and both Martin and I were received by Justin, Martin using his beam and me using my triband coliner. The same broadband amp works on 2m too, not quite as athletically as it does lower down, but good for a clean 50W of DVB-T.
Justin successfully sent 70cms DVBS-2 back to Martin, but I wasn't planning for 70cms so missed out.
All in all a good days play, cooling solution and proper interfacing needed for my amp now, its no good sitting in a cupboard....

I would like to say thanks to Rob M0DTS/P and to Clive G4FVP for the contacts made with me on 146.5 yesterday.

Their perseverance and patience in seeking out my signal has encouraged me to better my 146.5 equipment.

No records were broken as we are quite local stations here but an enjoyable few hours.

It was nice to see your signal Barry, over a fair bit of high ground too!
Your signal had a fair bit of multi path effect seen by the dip in the middle of the signal.
Also a lot of other signals seen on 144/145MHz when I switched to the Vertical antenna!!
My 2m band pass is quite sharp as seen but they are pretty strong!
There is life on 2m yet!

Also nice to Work Clive G3GJA, Clive G4FVP and Dave G4EEV on 146MHz DATV :-)
