Pre-contest Equipment Shakedown Saturday 5 June 2021
Pre-contest Equipment Shakedown Saturday 5 June 2021
As the last Activity Weekend was largely rained off, Noel G8GTZ and I plan to have a pre-contest Equipment Shakedown on Saturday 5 June. Location TBD, but probably near Salisbury for me.
Is anybody else able to participate on that day? Perhaps an outing for the KLB van?

I'll be out too, location somewhere that will work best for both/all of you. My usual site is handily local (Woldingham IO91XH) but able to venture forth and try other(s) depending on the gear I take and car or radio truck.
If people know the site they will use, could they 'plant' themselves on the map temorarily (perhaps as /P if it allows that) and then we can all play 'try the path'. (As an example I have planted myself at Firle Beacon for the day....)

I am doing a walking tour of Bredon Hill as part of the Malvern 2021 walking festival on the 5th but would be available on the 6th

I'm planning to be out with 70cms.23.13.9&6 on a 5m mast or tripod depending on band. Lots of gear and systems to test.
I will probably be at Lane End south of Winchester, assuming its a reasonable compromise to reach Noel, Dave and possibly Colin on some of the bands at least.
Its a couple of hours drive for me, so if somewhere closer to home might work better happy to reconsider.
Suggestions welcome for other locality sites that may work better. Its 1986 since I was last in Winchester so I really don't know the area....
For the contest weekend, I'll probably do one day at my usual Woldingham Surrey IO91XH site and then pick another site for the second day.
Might try down south west a bit (as above) or midlands at Burton Dassett where theres a chance of 'op north??.

Update from me, looks like Butser Hill will now be my location, subject to final confirmation.

Been a while since I've visited Butser, but be advised there are carpark charges and you can't get up to the top anymore (unless pre arranged?). Maybe worth looking at Wether Down just down the road, as long as your vehicle is able to off road a bit ? Oh and don't forget your £1 to drop in the box.

Thanks John, as you say just up the road. Is this the site that's popular with hang gliders etc....and free access along the top of the field in exchange for a donation?
Sounds more ideal that Butser and a little/lot less public....
Car isn't a low slung sports so should be find in field/farm tracks etc.

I forgot to say anything at the time but I had problems with the farmer last time I used Whether Down, even though I had put a £1 in the box so suggest you stay out of the field - I have got a phone number to call him on but not sure it's worth the hassle.
You can park on the track in front of the PMR station - a bit less space but does work OK.

Noel, I had a feeling you had an issue somewhere round there, so that was it
I hugely appreciate the access to private fields etc (my local one asks for £20 a day) which for being legit and left alone is worth the peace and quite (to me). Others I have tried round here won't entertain it regardless of sensible £'s.
I'll try Butser car park for this Saturday I think unless advised otherwise.
