September 15, 2019 Dutch balloon fox hunt

Post by PE1BR » Thu Sep 12, 2019 6:47 am

Almost every radio interested person has heard of the Balloon Fox Hunt. In its 40-year history, quite a few radio amateurs and other sounders have participated in this well-known event. This year the Balloon Fox Hunt is taking place for the 41st time. As usual, the event is scheduled this year on Sunday, September 15, 2019, so that is again on the Sunday of the second full weekend in September. If the weather gods are in our favor, the well-known probe will be released at 13.00 on a stratospheric balloon that usually reaches a height of 30+ kilometers. The probe normally stays in the air for about one and a half to two hours with many active sounders going to the extreme to reach the falling probe first. The organization will release the balloon again this year from a secret location in the Netherlands. As a result, it is no longer possible to determine the landing location in advance on the basis of computer calculations, so that it will again become a real level event. Last year this turned out to meet the expectations of the participants, which reached a new record. No fewer than 53 teams reached the landing site.

Like every year, the organization faces various challenges to steer the wide range of activities in the right direction. The balloon can be followed via the (stream of) ATV repeaters PI6HVS and PI6ATV. But of course you can also try to receive the images yourself. The balloon broadcasts video images at 1252 MHz (analog).
