August activity days - change of date - now 4th and 5th

Post by g8gtz » Tue Jul 17, 2018 10:18 am

Telford ARS are holding an ATV academy weekend on August 4th and 5th with an on air day on the Sunday - see viewtopic.php?f=85&t=5559 for more details (all are welcome).

In order to try and maximise the number stations available to work from Long Mynd or Brown Clee (2 very good sites near Telford) we are proposing to change the date of August activity weekend from the published dates to that weekend.

Afraid I Will be in Bolton at my QTH on winter hill. I have taken up DATV gear many times in the last year with no contacts so I won't be taking it this time.

Hi Mike,

I would have thought this is exactly the one time to take it as we will be on Long Mynd / Brown Clee which is line of sight to Winter Hill and we could work you on all bands up to and including 24GHz.

It would be good to have a known signal at a reasonable DX for everyone to try their newly completed gear out on.

Ni Noel,

Maybe, but I am not on 5.6GHz FM ATV and don't have microwave antennas up there. There is no local activity on 2m or 70cm.

There is a slim chance that I may be able to get my Portsdown/MiniTiouner setup working in time for that weekend, Noel. I also might be able to do 5.6G FM...

If I can manage it, I'll aim to be on my usual perch on Winter Hill - I'll keep you posted. If nothing else I may be able to get sorted for RX-only (144, 437, 23cm, 6cm)

Excellent - you could always come to the workshop on the Saturday and go out /p from Winter Hill on the Sunday?

Are the public still able to get to those places on Winter Hill after the fires?

The change of weekend suits us in the south because it doesn't clash with the Flight Refuelling rally. Perhaps the Bristol team can go somewhere like Westbury White Horse with a good take off north to provide a test signal for the workshop tests?

On the Sunday, I'll go to Dassett Hill in Warwickshire (IO92GE) with 70cm DATV.

I'm not sure, Mike - all the access was closed off last week when I last looked - the fires are largely out now, but crews still in attendance until the risk of re-ignition is negligible. I'll have a run up there sometime this week and check what's open.
