May 6th and 7th activity weekend

Post by g8gtz » Thu Apr 27, 2017 4:54 pm

Only 10 days to go to the next activity weekend - the evenings are getting lighter and hopefully it will be a bit warmer by then (the forecast looks very good). The weekend also sees the RSGB 10 GHz NB contest on Saturday and IARU 432 and up contest on Saturday and Sunday.

I'm planning to go out, location TBD, and will have all bands including 10 GHz.

If you are looking for /p site, the site map may give you some ideas: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit? ... 999227&z=7

BTW - the next activity weekend in June is the IARU contest and it will be great to see if we can beat the record number of UK entries in last year's event - more details nearer the time.

I'm also hoping to go out and about probably from near Beverley again but a slightly different location, I believe the South Yorkshire guys are also Champing at their bits.

I need to play Aerials before then, is BATC the right forum to ask serious AE questions?

Ask away but preferably in a new topic under "general ATV discussion".

Is that yor usual corner Rob?

I'll be heading for Beverley again... I have a secret weapon similar to your own but Silver Blue, I gave it a test run a few weekends ago with Gary M1EGI.

This weekend has been an AE weekend, spent most of the day in the garden yesterday.. Playing. Why oh why are these 23cms AEs soooo diferent?? The middle one turned out to be a complete dud, RF output => 0 so I canibalised it for parts to improve the top one.

It turns out that I have been using the Best RX antenna for TX and the best TX antenna for RX.. Doh!

For TX, the Severnside AE beat all comers by a country mile, even with an attentuator in the RX.. Blew them into the weeds it did, and other such superlatives.

The Home made AE had a single Dipole but was best at RX so.. since the Folded Dipole and reflector on the dud were almost the same as the Sevenside I cleaned them up and did some experimenting.. Leaving them loose on the boom allowed me to move them around to find the sweet spot.. and lo. the Homemade was improved no end.

Then it just needed the masthead preamp fitting.

Job done.. TX and RX Aerials sorted all ready for next wekeend.

Ok now have a home brewed drive on bracket to use with my small pump up mast, so will be out on Sunday only probably from Lane End (as long as no one else was going there ?) To save bringing every thing including the kitchen sink what bands do the locals in Southampton area most want to try ? and what times are others likely to be out ?

All Best John

On Sunday, GW3NWR/P will be near Bylchau, North Wales, IO83FD with a good takeoff from west clockwise to south-east.

We will have analogue TX on 23cm and 3cm, digital TX on 23cm and 2m and RX on many bands.

Plan for Saturday is to either go to:

Win Green near Salisbury (50.98345, -2.1125 - IO80WX)

or Lulworth Ranges near Wareham in Dorset (https://wiki.batc.tv/Lulworth_Ranges_-_Povington_Hill).

I will take TV gear for most bands (TBD depending on demand) but also 10GHz NB gear and will be concentrating on the NB contest after 3pm.

On Sunday I will be going to the Ridge Way near Didcot - (1.31149 W 51.55333 IO91IN)

This is further north than my usual sites (North of the M4 = passport required!!) and has very good take off to the West / North / East so hope to work some of the Welsh / Yorkshire groups plus the Dunstable crew.

I will have the following gear:
146 RB-TV
437 RB-TV and DATV
23cms ATV and DATV
10 GHz ATV rx and DATV tx and rx

Talkback 144.750 and http://www.dxspot.tv and mobile 07881914287
