Should we have a BATC contest in September?

Post by g8gtz » Tue Jun 11, 2024 10:42 am

Having just enjoyed last weekend operating in the IARU contest and hearing people say they hadn't been on since the last contest a year ago, I wondered if there is any interest in a BATC sponsored contest in September.

Is there any interest?

We can write our own rules so what would you like to see?

We might even persuade the treasurer to fund some Amazon vouchers for the top 3 stations?

Thoughts????

Seems like a good idea, reasonable chance of decent weather. I don't think I could cope with 7 bands again but could certainly go a-roving based out the back of my estate car. I might even have optimised things further by them too.....

Can we have a 'highest recorded MER' category then ;-) Or some combined score from MER x D number to encourage quality signals.....

Yes I'd be interested.
I liked the original Summer fun and IARU arrangement, may have more chance of hitting some tropo on two weekends!

Seen as we are adding contest photos..... it was a bit blowy for me!

Just found this post from Rob PE1ITR:
Here is the calendar of the Dutch ATV contests/activity weekends by the VERON for information:

The all mode ATV competition on 70cm and up:
1. March 9, 2024 12:00 - March 10, 2024 1800 UTC
2. June 8, 2024 12:00 - June 9, 2024 1800 UTC. This contest coincides with the IARU ATV contest and includes the 6m frequency band.
3. September 14, 2024 12:00 - September 15, 2024 1800 UTC
4. December 14, 2024 12:00 - December 15, 2024 1800 UTC

The digital mode only (RB-DATV) competition on 6m, 2m and 70cm:
1. April 20, 2024 12:00 - April 21, 2024 1800 UTC.
2. August 17, 2024 12:00 - August 18, 2024 1800 UTC.
Potentially we could take part Veron contest in September...

Sea ducting across the North Sea? If we scatter ourselves along the East coast there's opportunity to work each other too??

Some history:
Until a few years ago, the second weekend of September was the IARU ATV contest, which coincided with the Dutch ATV contest.
I remember that the BATC protested against this because a few potential participants went to the IBC in the Netherlands and would therefore not be able to participate...
In deliberation with the various parties involved (and because I had already made a proposal to revice the regulations), the IARU contest was then postponed to June.
Ironically enough, I understood that those few people for whom everyone had to adjust never ultimately participated in the IARU contest (but to be honest, based on rumours ;) ).

Back to now:
More and more Belgian stations are participating in the ATV contests in the Netherlands, who also simply send their logs to the Netherlands. Just participate in Germany, UK or France and send in your logs too.
These contests are always (as long as I remember) the second full weekend of March, June, September and December.

Have fun making ATV contacts!
