More 6cm from Cumbria
Re: More 6cm from Cumbria
The two groups should take advantage of this long path and make a contact using lightwaves, not necessarily ATV related but it would be a UK record and is a fun project.
Excellent work finding that nice path and good to see some more new stations on ATV.
I don't think any LOS path exists from IO74 to IO94 but i would like to have a go if there is a possibility

G3NWR is planning to go to Kirkstone for the IARU contest, so we could check if the path really is LOS. What non-comms equipment would you recommend? Laser pens, high power torches?

Re: More 6cm from Cumbria
During daytime it will be difficult to spot.
As bright a light as you can find, red light travels the best.
Most of the optical setups use a 1W or more Red LED and an A4 page magnifier as the lens (both are readily available), I just de-focus to spread the beam for initial spotting. Sometimes a flashing light is useful to differentiate between the sodium lights.
Laser pointers are useless for initial line up as the beam is just too narrow and very difficult to point after that. If local officer turns up asking what you are doing, don't mention anything about lasers...!
Make sure you have a landmark to reference to when pointing the light.
Optical conditions will have to be extremely good on that long a path so if at first you don't succeed, i would always have another attempt.

Thanks Rob, I'll give it a try.

Re: More 6cm from Cumbria
There are currently nice 12W red LED's on ebay for reasonable price, search PT-54 Phlatlight.
These are VERY bright, have modulated the one i got about 6 years ago at over 11A and it survived.

Re: More 6cm from Cumbria
Thanks, I'll get one of those. G4HJW kindly gave me some Osram W5APs to try. I'm gathering bits for optics at the moment.

Re: More 6cm from Cumbria
Myself Nick G0HIK and Chris M0KPW, worked newcomers to 6cms (but experienced ATV's) Dave G3ZGZ, Ted G4MXR and Bob G1EPL.
It was great to work some new stations, P5 signals both ways with all stations, over the 40km path from Blackpool to Ulverston Cumbria.
We are always happy to work new stations and try new paths.
