I can confirm that I will be out /P from about 1100 on Sunday at IO80WP, half way between Weymouth and Bournemouth.

I will be equipped with 146 RB-TV and 70 cm DATV and RB-TV. Talkback on 144.75 and DXSpot.TV

Should have a good take off all round from Bristol to Newbury to Portsmouth.

ATV Activity Weekend 12/13 March 2016 - Reports

Post by G8GKQ » Mon Mar 14, 2016 9:34 am

I would be very interested to receive news of activity (successes and failures) over the weekend so that I can report it in CQ-TV.

Just a few words in an e-mail or a photo or anything will do!

Thanks

Dave

G3NWR/P.

G6NOI and I arrived at the 1675ft ASL Holme Moss viewing car park at 1230 on Saturday. There was plenty of snow around, but fortunately the roads were clear.

We didn't get to try half the things we wanted to do. Too much equipment and too little time. We must get better organised. The June outing should give us a few more hours.

M0DTS/P on the North York Moors received us off the back of our beam on 23cm digital. We got into GB3YT near Huddersfield very easily and received GB3VL in Lincoln on 23cm digital without a preamp. We failed to receive M0DTS/P and GB3LX in Lincoln on 10GHz. M0DTS/P was slightly obstructed, but the lack of GB3LX was a surprise. We ran out of time to try 2m with M0DTS/P and G1LPS.

Were were expecting reception problems on 2m, with having a megawatt of Band 2 and DAB on the other side of the road. It started out well, but we found that when we rotated the mast with the 2m Slim Jim on top, we completely lost all reception on 2m in certain positions. Curious. We changed to a mag mount and that worked fine.

Drawbacks of Holme Moss are that it's very popular (we had several enquiries from the public) but it has no facilities - or bushes. I was forced to venture off the car park onto the unstable ground in search of a discreet hollow. Think of the Dead Marshes in Lord of the Rings, with the addition of snow. Where's a Hobbit when you need one? The first time I fell over, it was fortunately on snow and I remained unsullied. My luck ran out on a muddy area 6ft from the safety of tarmac and I came up looking slightly less presentable than Gollum. The perils of portable operation.

We moved on to a second site a few miles away on the A635 west of Holmfirth, of 'Last of the Summer Wine' fame. We had a 2 way 23cm digital contact with G4YWD on the Wirral, a one way analogue to G3UVR on the Wirral and a 2 way analogue with Warrington Radio Club at their QTH.

Roll on June.

Arqiva really should fix the tilt on their mast.
