The lazy man's way out is to use one of the Hauppauge HD-PVRs
Hardware encoding of H.264 and AAC up to 1080i
Composite and component input.
Fully supported by Linux (raspbian)
Transport stream output ( PIDS: PMT = 256, VIDEO = 4113, AUDIO = 4352, PCR=4097)

I have not tried their latest HD-PVR yet which supports 1080p and has HDMI input.

As far as the keyboard is concerned you could try

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

I used that to set my Picuntu 4.5 to a UK keyboard.

Here's a link to an 1920 x 1080 transmission captured off-air from the RPi camera. Although the main attraction of H.264 (MPEG-4) is being able to lower the data rate for the same video quality, it shows the quality you can get at the most popular 23cm symbol rate of 4000.

It's 40MB of a static scene. You need to download it and play it with WMP, as the Dropbox player reduces the quality.

Can any ornithologists identify the bird at the end?

After logging in, you need to go to the folder containing the program and execute it. At the $ prompt, type (case sensitive):

cd DATVRelease
cd Digilite
./usbdigilite.sh

I usually connect the DigiLite before starting the program. You should get a screen something like in the file link below. It won't be exactly the same, as I'm transmitting the data over WiFi using different settings rather than directly to a DigiLite. The bottom line of the screen should be counting up and the camera LED should be on.

Do you have an HD receiver?

The transmission coding is DVB-S (same as standard DigiLite) rather than DVB-S2, so a non-HD receiver will still scan and detect it, but the video compression is MPEG-4 rather than the MPEG-2 that the PVR-150 provides.

A non-HD receiver won't know what to do with MPEG-4. I haven't tried it myself, but a blank screen sounds very likely. You may be in the same situation with GB3UD if they don't have an HD receiver.

You can change the symbol rate and some of the PIDs. I'll post my settings shortly.

Slight problem - the RPi software doesn't allow PIDs below 256, which GB3UD would need. Best let me know if you have an HD receiver and I can show you how to change the PIDs and other parameters.

Incidentally, the receiver used for the demo video above was a Labgear HDSR300 and not a Labgear LG300, which is something slightly different.

I can't really recommend the HDSR300. Although the pictures are excellent, it can take a long time to lock on. It does have a USB port for recording incoming transport streams though.
