Mounting DigiLite board in enclosure?

Post by g4bbh » Sun Dec 25, 2011 4:39 pm

Has anyone found a good way to mount the DigiLite board in an enclosure? There are no provisions for mounting screws/pillars. The problem is agravated by the requirement to support the USB module with the forces that will be placed on it with connection/disconnection of the USB cable. I thought of some sort of board edge bracket but could not find anything listed in the catalogues. In addition there needs to be some good grounding which would otherwise have been provided by conventional bolt/pillar mounting. In my case I have some suitable Panacea EMC boxes (16.4 x 10.2 x 3.3cm) with lids that will take the board and oscillator etc. perfectly - if only I could find a way to mount them!

Hello Dick
I have used plastic Kitchen unit block's to mount mine on a board for testing seems to be OK
have cut a slot in them about half way which slides on to board and it holds them well and sturdy
and it gives air space under the board, I think i will use something like that when I mount In the
box and for earthing down with copper braid in a place or two.hope this gives you an idea.

Farnell have some USB panel connectors. You would need to cut and splice a cable inside your box.

I found an answer to mounting the DigiLite PCB. RS components do various self adhesive PCB guides with various sections. I purchased some old stock number ones on eBay for 99p a pack of 10 ( old number 543-636 - new number 507-5778). These are plastic guides with an adhesive backing and easily cut to length. They fit snugly on the board and stick firmly to the sides of my encosure. I did have to leave gaps for connectors, make a notch for R3 and leave a gap around R33 and U6. THe USB module fits so firmly on the DigiLite board that no further support was necessary.
On the work bench these guides, without using the adhesive backing, have also been handy to lift the DigiLite and other boards off the bench.

Now that I've come to use the first USB connector above, I found that I had to file down the front as the plug wasn't going in far enough to mate with the socket.

The Mini-B pinout says that the outer black wire is GND and the other black wire might be a presence detect. I found that the inner black wire on the panel connector was GND, so I just connected both black wires to GND and also the shield.

Use four 2.5mm bolts in the corners of the board.http://www.g8ajn.tv/dlproject3.htmlThey do not need to be electrically connected to the ground plane so nylon could be used if preferred.

Hi all I have mounted mine with 4 3mm nylon stand offs and screws I think with the 5.7 board as the SMA input is located close
but should be able to drill quite close to the edge or near to the JP1.
Mine is the 5.6 board and is firm with only 3 in place.
Take a look at 4 point fixing.
