Digilite with Hauppauge WinTV PVR2 USB2

Post by F1CJN_alain » Mon Nov 07, 2011 6:49 pm

It works fine.
I found it at a 20€ price in a French Ebay named "Le bon coin" (The good corner)
The WinTV PVR2 USB2 appears in WinTV6 as a" PVR 250".

A big step toward the use of the Digilite in the fields, with a Laptop.
It only needs to have a separate 6V @ 1.66A regulator circuit instead of the outlet power supply.

It would be interesting to know which versions people have. I have 2 versions here. Both work fine on XP.

29035 Rev C324 PAL-I
29039 Rev D157 PAL-B/G-I-D/K-SECAM

Looking at the Hauppauge site, there is a 24xxx version out there. There is also A PVR USB without the 2. I'm not sure about the difference. I would stick with the USB2 version to be safe.

I have tried connecting a USB PVR2 to my XP Pro PC. It fought me all the way, but after installing and removing the drivers (use the latest from Hauppage site) a couple of times it eventually condescended to install the software to run it with. That worked ok with WinTV6 which I had already installed with a PVR150 PCI card, and when I moved up to WinTv7 that went in and worked ok too.
Ensure that you are in a USB2 port.
A second unit that I had bought from Ebay would not install and appears to be a dud.
So no excuses now, get that old laptop running and lets have loads of mobile DATV !

I now also have two of these USB devices. Both use the Conexant CX23416-12 encoder and seem to give similar results via composite and s-video sources. In fact I can interchange them without altering any configuration settings in WinTV or GBPVR both under XP and under Win7:-

29035 Rev C324 PAL-I - Philips tuner. Draws 1.2A @ 6V and gets quite warm but has been reliable for 6 months.
24019 Rev C289 PAL-B/G -I-D/K-SECAM. TCL tuner. Draws 700mA @ 6V and running cool. Also seems reliable.

I really can't see why the 29035 version draws so much more current but the tuner does get fairly warm. There are also more chips in the later version, all running warm. Both models draw much lower currents when inactive.

As with most of my portable setup I have purchased a small switch mode regulator to run these off 12V with about half the current (355 mA @ 12V on the 24019 version).

The only drawback I have found with the WinTV encoders is that there does not seem to be any way to adjust image properties during encoding (saturation, brightness. contrast etc,).

I know which one to take portable now. I wonder if the supply to the tuner could be disconnected without causing any problems?

It's possible to adjust the picture using GraphEdit. You've probably seen the posts by F6DZP showing how to use it to do the job of GBPVR and much more.

It's available here: http://www.digital-digest.com/software/ ... id=0&did=1

Run GRAPHEDT.exe and click GRAPH on the top menu line

Click INSERT FILTERS

Go down to WDM STREAMING CAPTURE DEVICES and click on the plus sign

Click on HAUPPAUGE WINTV PVR2 USB2 ENCODER and then click on INSERT FILTER below

Close the INSERT FILTERS box

You should now see the Hauppauge filter you just selected.

Right click on the filter and click FILTER PROPERTIES

Look for VIDEO PROC AMP and click it

You can use this while GBPVR is recording a file.

The setup for the PVR150 is slightly different. I'm not sure if the Video Proc Amp is in the same place. I don't have a PVR150 installed at the moment. If it isn't there, it should be in one of the WDM Capture / Encoder / Crossbar sections.

I just checked the PVR150. It's still in WDM STREAMING CAPTURE DEVICES, but it's called Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Capture.

It has been pointed out to me elsewhere that (with WinTV6) you can go to Menu-Configure-Colour and alter brightness, contrast and saturation which WinTV saves, possibly in the registry, and applies to the WinTV PVR USB2 box. The settings are retained when GBPVR is invoked and seem to be retained by the WinTV PVR USB2 box until it, or the pc, is powered down. On rebooting it is only necessary to run WinTV once and then close it down whereupon the setting (from registry?) are again applied to the WinTV device. No need to go through the Menu-Configure-Colour procedure again. This may be less convenient than piping through a Graphedit filter but requires no overhead on a low spec machine like my netbook. Any correction seems to apply to both composite and s-video inputs but not independently.
I suspect this may also work for the WinTV x50 series PCI cards but would have to haul out the old PC to find out.
