Watching the BATC streamer on VLC

Post by g8gtz » Wed Mar 10, 2021 10:32 am

Since the demise of Flash at the end of last year, a standard web browser uses the HTML 5 stream and has about 15 seconds delay on the streamed signal.

I've set up a page on the BATC wiki on how to use VLC to watch streams without the long delay – https://wiki.batc.org.uk/Watching_the_streamer_with_VLC

I've seen various other tips on shortcuts etc - perhaps people can update the wiki page with these.

To create a desktop short cut to a particular stream. Just create a short cut to VLC on the desktop then right click and go to properties and add the address to the stream you want at the end of the program line. I'll up date the wiki later when I'm home unless someone beats me to it.

For anyone who has a number of stream they enjoy watching this may be of use and saves having loads of VLC short cuts! Just unzip the attatched file to a folder of choice, in the folder your find a file "BATCStreams.txt" this file can be edited with your favourite lists of streams. Once running select the stream from the drop down menu and click OK, on the Minitiouner window type in your Ip address (if different) for MT and click ok. At the moment you will need to click ok each time the signal changes, as I haven't worked out how to reset VLC automatically yet. If you double click on any of the windows it will go full screen, double click again to go back to the quad view. I'm very new to Visual Studio (and coding in general !) so there may be a few bugs, let me know if there is.

Looks good John. :9941 made it work with WinterHill, as a non-broadcast address.

I'll publish a spec shortly for anyone who'd like to make their multi-VLC viewer compatible with WinterHill. WinterHill outputs a status stream with receive info to go into the VLC title bar and also indicates when VLC should be reset after a change of station or codec.

I've written a quad viewer for WinterHill, but it's just 4 separate VLC windows. I did try modifying Rob's C# QuickTune, but I tend to avoid C++ and other object-orientated languages on religious grounds - they're the work of the devil. :)

Hi John

Very good :-)

A couple of comments - first a real nick pick, personally I find callsigns in lower case, as in your drop down menus, annoying - but that's more my problem than yours!

I'm in the middle of writing a basic article for CQ-TV on why we now have a 15 second delay on streams and I think a single channel larger screen version of this could be attractive to offer folks as an alternative to having to configure VLC.

Any chance we could put something like that on the wiki - I presume they would have to download VLC first?

Glad it's not just me who has a thing about lower case calls, proper nouns are another one. ;)

Ok Sorry about the lower case was just being lazy as the web address needed lower case ! So I've now corrected the lower case issue and also included a single screen version as well.

A small update to BATC Stream Viewer, added the ability to stay on top so it can be placed on top of a browser to cover the stream window so you can still interact with the chat. A quick fix until I work out how to include the chat in the same window.
