When Flash goes EOL

Post by KA5BBC » Tue Jun 02, 2020 2:10 pm

With Flash going EOL in 6 months so we have a low latency alternative lined up yet?
There are several protocols (such as SRT which is supported in gstreamer, Wireshark, VLC, FFmpeg) and plugins for existing systems (such as H5Live) that are available to consider.
I know that a lot of my broadcasting contacts believe that the December EOL date will be a sudden cut off rather than a slow demise and have prepared accordingly.

Hi Andy,

We're testing a few alternatives to the Flash Player, the most promising so far is WebRTC for delivery to the webpage. We've got a proof-of-concept setup using the exact same RTMP upload interface, so if this works out then no major changes to remote streaming kit would be needed (although there will be codec limitations). This would require the user to be running a modern operating system, although we'll likely keep the HTML5 as a fallback.

As always the biggest headache is integration. It took a lot of effort to get the Streamer working with our new website the way it does today, and any change on that interface adds new things for users to learn and demands both development and support effort from our volunteer team. We want to minimize this as much as possible and so we're looking for the less flashy (and less advertised) solutions that can often be more easily integrated into the system we have, ideally also with no new license costs.

We will post a proper update on this as the result progresses towards the user-readiness stage.
