batc streams

Post by G0NMY » Mon Nov 15, 2010 12:04 am

Hello everyone.

Tonight I was watching Geoff's M1AHN's ATV stream and really enjoyed a lot of the content he was showing.
Including the launch of Appollo 11 and the moon landing. I think Geoff should be praised for providing interesting content.
Whilst talking to geoff he mentioned that he had been asked to reduce his streaming due to bandwidth issues.
Whilst I realise that running the stream costs the BATC money, Geoff has supported it from day 1 as far as I can remember.

I have been on this site and watched repeaters cyling through their ident with no other content being shown, and yet they are streamed 24/7.
And when selecting multiple streams his is the only stream that works I can never get any of the usa streams to work even though they are shown as streaming. But Geoffs is there as normal, giving visitors something interesting to watch.
Geoff is always very aproachable and chats regularly with lots of visitors to the stream, even if they remain anonamous he always says hello if he is there.

Geoff does not have a TV repeater near his location so enjoys running the stream and chatting when he can.

I am surprised that the batc would ask one of its main streaming supporters to limit his usage even though he is offering
good content for this site.
I asked him if maybe it was because he made reference to RADSAT, I thought maybe the batc was thinking Geoff had a precuniary interest
in using the stream. but Geoff told me it is not a buisiness just a ham radio interest site.

Geoff doesnt know I am writing this but I was shocked that the batc would ask him to reduce his usage in supporting this site.

I think he should be commended, not repremanded!

Thanks for reading...... Mark

It's unlikely that the BATC would restrict his streaming.
It's probably his Internet Service Provider (ISP) that makes the restriction.

sorry Dave you guessed wrong. The BATC has sent all of us an email to state that "we" were using up the server bandwidth. Admittedly there was a few streams that sent testcards and such to the server but I was streaming a video playlist. Archiving the videos on the BATC server is not an option as I don't like my videos copied as there is a copyright placed on them.

I have moved my stream, however, and it seems to be working well. For those who ARE interested it's at http://www.m1ahnradsat.camstreams.com. Sorry guys, it's your loss....and I paid two years subs in advance. I won't be renewing it after that, that's for sure.

Just to put the record straight, Geoff was not told to restrict his stream, we sent a blanket email requesting that people streaming a lot to consider more efficient use of the facilities, as the server bandwidth was getting rather high and bandwidth costs money. We are a club, not a commercial concern and the streamer is funded entirely by voluntary donations.

The email was aimed at "testcard" shots and what we have termed "home security" shots that some were streaming 24/7. I had an email conversation with Geoff and explained that he should not take the email personally and that the email wasn't aimed at him, it was sent out to anyone using over a certain amount of bandwidth on the server. I did suggest that he could upload any interesting content to the archive section so that it was available to interested parties whenever they wanted to view it, on-demand, which is a far more efficient mechanism for letting people view his content, but he declined saying he didn't want his content copied. I am not sure I understand the logic of that, as it is a trivial matter to record a live stream, almost as easy as it is to copy material in the archive.

I did my best to answer Geoffs questions in an honest and open manner, unfortunately he appeared to take offense to my suggestions, or at least miscontrued what I was saying and decided to move his stream elsewhere, which is of course his perogative. For whatever reason, Geoff and I appear to be on "different wavelengths" and despite my best attempts to have a friendly and constructive discussion, he seemed to take umbrage with practically every comment I made. I guess one can't please everyone all of the time!

I just want to ensure that no-one gets the wrong impression from his comments here, and as I am sure everyone is well aware, there are always two sides to every story. I would be happy to answer any questions that anyone has regarding this, or any other matter, relating to batc.tv

Kind Regards,
Chris - G1FEF
