Flash and the BATC Streamer - What Next

Post by G8GKQ » Wed Jan 13, 2021 10:29 am

Some of you may have experienced some minor inconvenience when Flash was disabled in browser plugins yesterday; others will not have noticed any difference.

The BATC have always tried to exploit the best available technology to support our members in the hobby of Amateur Television. As of yesterday, the best available and affordable streaming technology for viewing the BATC Streamer in a browser is HTML5. This was first included in the streamer as a supplement to Flash a few years ago.

Amongst our 1450 members, we only have one who has volunteered to try to implement a low-latency replacement for Flash streaming. He also maintains the existing streamer, the QO-100 Spectrum Viewer and the QO-100 WebSDR, in addition to holding down a full-time job.

There is no open-source software that implements the functionality that we require. A number of approaches have been tried but a few, including the one described during CAT20, have proved to be dead ends. The effort to provide a low latency streaming solution for browsers continues, but please be understanding that we are an organisation of volunteers and that it may take some time.

In the meantime, the low latency Flash stream can still be viewed in VLC or on the Portsdown system. The associated chat functionality is unaffected by any of these changes.
