GB3EY on air

Post by G3GJA » Sat Aug 24, 2019 8:55 pm

GB3EY was switched for the first time from its new site and using DATV at 1700 today the 22nd August 2019. It is running in 'beacon' mode only and there are no active inputs. The site is at Cave Wold Radio Station with QTH locator IO93RS37ME about 9 miles WNW of Hull in East Yorkshire.

It is running just over 4.5 watts RMS to a temporary Alford Slot antenna 6M AGL and the site is 155m ASL. Symbol rate is 4MS/s, FEC 3/4 and the frequency is unchanged at 1308MHz.

Reports would be welcomed via email to clive (AT) hesh.co.uk or richard (AT) guttridge.karoo.co.uk

That's brilliant Rob.

You get the accolade of best DX reception so far and it's a surprisingly good report bearing in mind that the antenna has got 33m of Westflex 103 on it incurring at least 6dB loss.

We had to use a ready made cable as the crimp N types I brought with me would not fit the LMR400 clone coax. I plan to get that cable fitted this week and probably get another 2m of elevation for the antenna too.

In other news, on Friday night we recovered our hoard of LDF5-50 that we plan to run up the tower to get the antenna up to 20m AGL at least, more if we can manage it.

Great stuff, it certainly is working as it is.

I tried from IO94LI, one of the other nearby sites that i use but unusually GB3VL on 1310 was much stronger than normal so was blocking i think.
Will do more checks next time i'm out.
My chances of receiving it at home are close to nil but i will be looking on the next tropo event, i have seen VL before at P1 from home back in 2010 i think.
