Beginners antennas

Post by G4GUO » Wed Mar 09, 2011 10:32 am

Hi,

Does anyone know where it is possible to get a low gain antenna for 24 cms
suitable for simple home construction / inexpensive. I am trying to get some of
my locals interested in ATV on 24. Getting hold of a Freesat box is not
a problem but getting hold of a simple antenna to plug it into is.

Would an Alford Slot be any use?

I was really looking for a simple (really cheap) antenna to get people started.
(I need an audience for my transmissions!)
There is a guy selling a bunch of 16 ele Comet Yagis on eBay at the moment
for £35 each item nr 170603715687 that is the closet I have come so far.

Hi Charles..

Good luck finding something, i have never seen anything like that unfortunately... the only thing was the sevenside antennas.
My first antenna was home brew loop yagi as there was nothing available then (~10 years ago)

A old sat dish with ring feed will work fine at 23cm, maybe that's a bit big though..?!
A horn made from a large tin?

13cm has much more available but far more interference due to that!

Hi Rob,
Probably the cheapest solution will be to use a piece of double sided PCB for the transmission line
and soldering 14 SWG elements onto it. I have seen that done with an LPA but I assume one could
do something similar with some phased dipoles then tape that to an upstairs window. I will have to have
a think about it.

Yes that would be quite neat.
Watch out for the new pilkington K windows, they reflect RF very well at the higher bands!

A year or so back i had a 10GHz (ssb) qso with Eddie G0EHV via rain scatter, I am south of him and so was the the rain storm.
Eddie had his east facing window open at 45deg and was reflecting the 10G signals (with the tx in the shack) off down the side of his house into the rainstorm then down to me!

that was a very interesting qso!

Hi Rob,

I managed to get diverted 'again'. 10 GHz ATV, apparently there has been some
activity locally on 10 GHz Digital ATV so I will have to investigate that next. I do have
some narrowband gear so I can re-use the WDG PA etc. I also have a YIG (8 - 9 GHz)
I bought a while ago so I can generate a synthesized LO signal and inject that into a
satellite LNB instead of the DRO. Not sure what to do about the tx side yet.

All play and no work!

Here is a PDF file with a design for a wideband 23/24cms atv antenna By G8CKN
Might be worth building a few?

Also design of cheap hairpin yagis for many different bands simple to build.
