It was open circuit. I have put a 1n914 in its place, but that is only rated for 300 mA continuous, so I will have to find something with a higher rating.

I use the smaller packaged diodes, e.g. the SS14, in a DO-214AC package which is about 6mmx3mm in several projects. I think there is also one on the back of most Arduino Nano knock-offs that tend to blow when you accidentally short the 5V line.
