Internet only repeaters

Hi all,

I'm looking to revive interest locally in ATV. The main problems that we have encountered with a "normal" repeater were site fees and electricity bills!!

The idea of an internet only repeater seems to address these problems "IF" it can be achieved both cheaply and also with low power consumption?
I was speaking yesterday to our local 2m repeater keeper to see if such a system could be implemented at their site. There is internet access there and there are no objections to us putting up a small antenna on the side of the cabin. At this stage I'm thinking of an Alford slot, a digital sat rx,video detect circuit, card reader and video switch as the basics. The output would then need to be streamed to the BATC streamer with maybe the Portsdown?

I would appreciate peoples thoughts/ideas of how such a repeater could be implemented to fit the low cost/consumption criteria that I'm working to.
I'm not looking for anything too fancy but something that can be achieved with the very limited computer knowledge that I have and on a small budget.

I look forward to your thoughts, ideas and experiences of this kind of repeater.

Good question. How do you set one up?

Hi Malcolm.

Have you looked at http://www.batc.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=4801 about hardware side of a repeater?

Hope to write up how I'm doing things at IO92GQ, but it's at that changing by the hour stage.

As you can see I'm streaming with an Axis Encoder, but you would not need that if you have mains supply.

Tested a Pipo X9, just a X8 replacement at home last night, works great on Windows 10, streaming with Flash Media Live Encoder in GUI or CMD Line.

Also hope to run remote rotator from it.

I'm using an EXTRON SW 4AV RCA Four Input Composite Video & Stereo Audio Switcher Ebay 282093227531.

You just ground the inputs to switch video, so by keeping CH1 grounded for test card input the other 3 inputs will override as valid signal comes in from various lock lights / Analog decoder on various Rx's. then switch back to test card as default, other EXTRONS may not have that simple override a grounded input feature, so will need a different approach.

Re: Internet only repeaters. AXIS Q7401 and vMix

You can stream Axis Q7401 from your repeater site to another location (Home QTH) and then stream with vMix to the Batc.

vMix will convert the RTSP over TCP to RTMP for the Batc Streamer.

Add Input, select, RTSP over TCP, rtsp://user:password@ipaddress:port/axis-media/media.amp

Forum truncating URL..... should read.... :port/axis-media/media.amp

Add Stream rtmp://fms.batc.tv/live/xxxxxxx

Also useful for network - wifi ip cameras.

But with Pipo and possibly Portsdown, power budget should not be a problem.

Hi Peter,

many thanks for all of the info. It looks like there are a lot of possibilities with this type of repeater. I'm still getting my head around the equipment needs but the costs don't seem too bad. I'm going to get some kit together and have a play. If I use the equipment that you suggest I may have to ask you for some help with settings etc if that is ok? I could see that an article in CQ-TV would be a great help for others thinking of going down the same path. Hopefully, you can find time to provide this?

Hi Malcolm.

Hope you have a go, and please ask me on forum, others may then chip in, which will help.

Will have to take a few pictures and write something up when I get time.

Most of the information is out there, and it's basically the receive setup of any ATV repeater, without the Tx.

G8AJN'S website is a good starting point also, lock light mods for video switching especially.

http://www.g8ajn.tv/ have a look under receivers.

Peter

P.S Just found your early work on DigiLite, so Dave's site not unknown to you :-)

Hi Peter,

many thanks for all of your help. I've got a couple of parcels arriving on Friday so I'll have a play.

As you say I'm very familiar with Dave G8AGN and will take a look on his site.

Did you know that we now have three internet only repeaters on the BATC stream, great!
See: www.batc.tv click ATV repeaters. Look for callsigns starting with IO...
