7-band local oscillator Ron Mount – G7DOE

Post by G8DKC » Sat Oct 08, 2016 1:44 pm

Having looked a Ron's article in CQ-TV235 I have found a usb board that would go with the ADF4351 VCO/PLL.

It's called the CY7C68013A USB 2.0 board, Item number 331930491763, this one about £8.25 inc P&P.

If anyone want's to try this for quick evaluation, picture attached of link between the boards.

There are other ones out there cheaper still, but not associated with the ADF4351...

Thanks for the article Ron.

As a complete PIC and code newbie I'd also like to thank Alain (F1CJN) and Ron (G7DOE) for their recent ADF4350/1 projects.

As of yesterday I have successfully completed three variants.

Alain's RF generator from 34.5 to 4400MHz.

Ron's single output local oscillator + the 8 output version.

Great fun.

Kind of you to say so! A little secret - I have still to build an 8 freq version, I was optimistic I could make the code tweaks correctly and you have validated them for me :)

I have just realised the ADF4351 will make an excellent LO for the 3.4 GHz airspan boards which I have and so am going to build one of Ron's simple controllers.

I have downloaded the AD config tool and got the values for 2970MHz and edited the C file, which I downloaded from the wiki.

But there seems to be a bit of a hole in both the CQ-TV article and the wiki in that it does not say what C compiler and or what else is needed to use to generate the .hex and .asm files.

So what is the recommended solution that will just work out of the box- too busy posting Serit tuners and testing Portsdown boards to go up a long drawn out learning curve! https://twitter.com/G8GTZ/status/862963300925157377

Hi Noel,

I built several of these oscillators; Don G0WFT and Arthur G4CPE both use them with RBTVMOD boards.

MPLABX\v3.51 is the software I used; downloaded free from Microchip. When compiled the package directly programs the PIC using Pickit 3.

The compiler is XC8 which is also downloaded from the same site and integrates with MPLABX IDE.

Good Luck

Noel, Hi.

I used just the setup Steve describes, all nice free software :)

You are quite right though that I should have explained this in the article, so apologies. I've updated the wiki with this info.

Hi Ron,

I was a little lost as it was 3 years ago, using .asm files and a totally different divide by n chip to build a project.

I did build your SUP2400 switch though.

A load of your boards arrived from China the other day and thanks' to you, Steve's timing and a long weekend, I'm looking around for projects to build an oscillator for :-)

Peter Hi.

Thanks for your comments. There is nothing more satisfying than other amateurs picking up ones feeble offerings and making new things out of them.

Like you, I always used to use assembler on PICs but a club colleague convinced me a while back that there really was very little that couldn't be done in C and it's so much easier to maintain and understand.

I am looking for a "Good Samaritan" who can compile the source C code for me...
I would like to use the code to program up to 8 frequencies into a 12LF1552 chip.
I already modified the original "script/sketch" to adapt it to my ADF4351 whose clock is 25 MHz instead of 10 MHz and also modified the original frequencies...but I cannot understand how to compile it!!!

Claudio

I am in the middle of rebuilding my shack computer, but might be able to help during the next week or so. Please e-mail me your code. I have sent you a pm.

Dave
