I think the crinkly edges confuse the rf. It's not sure whether it can make it to the other side.

It's deliberate of course.....a sort of "scattering filter" to stop all those microwave harmonics propogating along the board.....

Anyone found a 5V Reg with the pin outs that match the PCB, the LD1117S50CTR mentioned in the article has the output in the middle as most of the SOT223 types tend to.

Diodes Inc. - ZSR500G has correct pinout. Farnell part No. 1132785. Got some spares if anyone wants one.
