keeping the "old school " gear alive
hi all , - interesting find at a radio rally recently - a complete tx system based on the "worthing " transmitter - now i know this is "old school " stuff but i and many others had a lot of fun with this simple gear back in the 80's / 90's before the "digital " craze came along
i was involved back then i was involved with the GB3WV ( wobbly video .lol ) repeater at north hessary tor , long gone of course
any hoo - i have decided to restore this tx to "working order " - and will be looking for an old "analogue " sat receiver at future rallys for the receive side as i consider we need to keep some of these old systems from an historical perspective
anyone else interested in this aspect of ATV ?? - or indeed still using the old FM systems ? - i'm guessing it would be frowned apon these days just like wideband fm on 10 ghz .lol - talking of which anyone still got a "bob platt's " 10 ghz board ?? - again great fun and simple !
afraid the "modern " digital stuff is too complicated and "computery " for my liking - also soldering SM components is out now owing to failing eyesight and arthritic fingers - but this little project will be interesting as i still have all the old paperwork somewhere and back in the day built several worthing setups

Re: keeping the "old school " gear alive
Preservation aside, we no longer have access to the bandwidth we once did, except perhaps above 23cm. In the lower bands, 70cm, 2m, 4m, 6m and 10m, digital is now the only option that fits.
However, rather than 10 GHz you may want to look at the 5.7 GHz modules aimed at drones. Quite a few people have been abusing these analogue FM TX/RX units successfully for 6cm ATV contacts. Now that radios like the IC905 shipping FM TV included, perhaps analogue ATV will become more accessible to those well heeled enough to afford them,
Personally, I will stick to digital. The world continues to rotate and the complicated computery side is for me, the more interesting bit.

Re: keeping the "old school " gear alive
I have a BATC 'satellite receiver' that came from a junk sale in a HUGE box, probably ex Marconi sig gen or similar. Left behind after a junk sale so I gave it a home. I can bring it to CAT24.....also a BACT pcb/module fully assembled less controls that I built around 1989 but never commissioned (children, house, jobs etc....) and a Bob Platts 23cm receiver with matching 2W PA and from memory 2 crystal channels.
Let me know if you are interested in any of this as I'm loading on Monday for CAT24.....

yes thanks mike - i have gear for 5.6 ghz - but the problem down here in the boondocks of the south west - NO ONE to talk TO - and as i mentioned to gareth - being mobility and sight disabled - i also of course don't drive anymore - getting out to try from any high ground is reliant on others - so i basically just potter around building bits to keep my sanity if nothing else .lol
unfortunatly in this area - the only thing most seem interested in is HF and FT8 - or linking everything to the internet and calling it amateur radio
as to the icom - well yes lovely bit of kit - way over my budget and again whats the point ?? as i could never justify it - also see "no one etc above " - i cant see them selling many here apart from the ego "oh I'VE got a 9700 or whatever " brigade - or maybe up in the midlands area where there is actually activity
no one has mentioned the QR-100 yet - but thats out too as rather large building blocking it - so basically a bit b*****rd - down here

any hoo thanks for your reply - best reguards
