OBS and DATV Easy 2.16

Post by g6hfs » Sat Mar 11, 2023 11:52 am

Hi,

I am not understanding how to setup obs ( what to put in stream server) to connect the datv easy software via usb, is there a link or a wiki page as I can not find any.

There are instructions in the PDF file that is liked to the software. You don't put anything in the stream server, that is not how it works. It uses the virtual camera and AB virtual audio cable - see here http://www.vivadatv.org//viewtopic.php?f=84&t=982

Hopefully this explains it all. However there are some subtleties. The virtual camera will follow your video output settings, so set these to what you plan to use in terms of frame rate and picture size. E.g. 1920x1080 and 15 fps for full HD in 333ks or 1280x720 25fps for 720p HD in 333ks. Trade off between frame rate and resolution.

You need to download and install the virtual audio cable. Then set it up as in the PDF. You will have an audio timing offset that you can set in PBS advanced audio properties.

I recall Martin G8KOE doing a guide somewhere on how to set it up. John G7JTT also wrote a CQTV article on using OBS.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply, getting some where now but no rf from pluto the green transmissions are on, with a bitrate so I must be still doing something incorrect any more suggestions.

Can you show us all the configuration tabs? What firmware is in the Pluto, is it matched etc etc. I don't see any transport stream being generated.

Hi Mike,

The picture was just taken as I stopped the stream, it seems the portsdown 4 dirty does not work with datv easy, have spoken with Martin G8KOE today.

So either a second Adalm Pluto or change firmware.

Thanks

Hi Brian,

It does work (of sorts) with that firmware, but you must set the config in DATV-Easy to stock (Adalm Pluto) firmware. I have it working this way but I'm getting dropouts, which I'm tying to fault find. Also, have you got the encoding set correctly for your PC? SOFT/INTEL/NVIDIA?

Dave

Interested to hear about dropouts using DATV Easy v2.16. I'm trying to get to the bottom of the same issue on G4YTV's similar set-up. Dropouts are random and frequent. On the face of it, it's a simple configuration on well endowed hardware that should work.

He's running v0.35 Pluto firmware and an Acer gaming laptop that has an embedded RTX3050 graphics system, 16GB RAM and a Core i5 10th gen processor. OBS v27 and the Virtual Cam plugin is feeding DATV Easy.

Even more puzzling is that i have a Pluto system using v0.35 firmware, same CPU and RAM but a RTX A2000 graphics card and I don't see the same issue, or rarely, a single dropout in an hour or so..

Both systems are running 1000kS/s / FEC 2/3, 1280 x 720 pixels, 25 fps, 64kbps audio. Why the difference in dropouts? Can't get my head around it. The performance indicators on the Acer laptop suggest it's not stressed in the slightest.

Laptop? You have made sure it isn't doing any power saving?

Hi,

After David’s suggestion I have got datv easy v2.16 to work, well sort of after a little time the info in the bit rate info box sometimes the numbers turn red then I get a dropout, the green boxes are still green then after a second the numbers go black and all ok again so I am not sure what to try next.

Hi everyone
From my recent experimentation its seems to me to be more about the data throughput to the Pluto that causes dropouts rather than the capabilities of the PC.
I am running 1000kS/s / FEC 2/3, 1280 x 720 pixels, 25 fps, 64kbps audio using "soft" processing (because intel processing has a curious pixel refresh every couple of seconds or so) on a 6th gen I7. The CPU activity is at about 30%. When watching my transmission using Winterhill I notice that when the dropout occurs the power of the signal also drops, it only happens for less than a second.
I get occasional dropouts, not frequent but if I change to 1/2FEC then the data bitrate drops from approx 1300 to about 900 and the dropouts almost totally disappear.
If I raise the bit rate to 1500KS/s then dropouts are continuous and Winterhill can't even get a lock on the signal but the PC is still not overworked.
My setup is, no RPI4, just Pluto connected to with its USB cable straight PC, and Pluto output connected via attenuator to Winterhill to rule out external interference, power level at Winterhill about 28MER.
I have tried USB2 and USB3 and results are the same. I tried some F5OEO firmware but the ones I tried may not have been the versions that DATVEasy can work with, when I did try the Pluto it insisted on transmitting on 437 and not where I had set it, though dropout frequency was the same.
