Hi,
I used to be active on ATV in the early 90's and built the GB3MV 23cm repeater and had a design published in Elektor for a low power FM ATV tx.
Now 20 years later I've just ordered a DTX1 as a prime mover for 70 and 23cms. I already have some filters and linear PA's and am now researching a suitable tuner.
I read that a Comag SL55 would be a candidate but can't find one on ebay.
Has anyone a suggestion for a similar unit ?

Hello Tim,
Welcome back to ATV! Almost any free to air digital satellite receiver will be suitable, as long as the symbol rate goes down to 2MS/s. This rules out Sky boxes, which tend to stop at around 22MS/s. Because these satellite receivers are part of the fast moving consumer electronics market, anything current today is likely to be superceded within six months. You will also find that a pre-amp will be necessary, unless you have very strong local signals, and a dc blocker to prevent the LNB control voltage being shorted out by an aerial which is a short circuit to dc.
Receivers which have proved suitable down here in Bristol, GB3ZZ land, include the Big Sat Golden 1CR, Manhattan Plaza, Avanit Traveller S1 and various Comag and Tevion models. A very useful device is the Satlink WS-6906, which is a completely self-contained receiver and sat-meter, available from Amazon for about £65. It has only one snag, when tuned to around 1316MHz, it puts out a sprog on 144.750MHz.

Hi Tim,
DTX1 should be with you tomorrow or Monday.
Basically any Free to Air (FTA) STB will do but as Shaun said quite few of us run the Bigsat CR1. Take a look at the guide here for more infor http://www.batc.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=3721

Re: Returning to ATV - rx choice ?
Hi Guys,
thanks for the tips on the rx - turns out I had already found that useful document.
DTX1 arrived safely this morning and it's currently sat on my test bench generating a clean looking signal into spectrum analyzer - hope it stays that way after I've amplified it.
Will likely be placing another order for some other bits and bobs.
Just hope there's someone to work in this neck of the woods. The locals seem to be running analog FM TV - fortunately I still have all my old analog stuff and it still works even after 20 years.
BTW Noel, I was licensed as G8GIW - so there's chance in the distant past we had a QSO.
