Glitches in DVB stream

Post by PE5PVB » Thu Sep 29, 2022 8:11 am

Hi,

I often wonder why you sometimes have glitches in the DVB datastream of the Pluto. I'm using a i9 with an Nvidia card so the PC should not be the problem. I use it on our local repeater with a symbolrate of 1000, but sometimes there is a short interruption. These interruptions also occur on my monitor receiver.

I see the same problems often happen with other Hams using a Pluto on QO100. Any ideas or tips?

Try running 333kS/s if your repeater will accept that symbol rate. Most QO100 users will not be using more than 333kS/s.

My local repeater GB3EY accepts 1000 and 333kS/s and I've found that 1000kS/s often causes glitches.

I'm using OBS > FreeStreamCoder > Portsdown 4 > Pluto or Lime Mini. The PC is a 10th generation i5 with an nVidia Ampere GPU.

OK. So I'm not alone on this. Very curious if this is a hardware limitation or if there is a solution for this. I also like to use DVB-S2 with a symbolrate of 2000. But then I don't get a stable RF signal.

Quite simply, you've no chance of 2MS/s with a Pluto, 1ms/s is pushing the limits of USB2 as has been well documented elsewhere, it is certainly in the Wiki. You're certainly not alone in wanting things to do more than their specification allows.

Dave,

Can you give me a link to where this is documented?

One of the pages is here, from memory there are others listing the capabilities of Pluto vs Lime.

Yes, it is in this section: https://wiki.batc.org.uk/Portsdown_4_Pluto#Limitations

This, of course, refers to the use of the Pluto with the Portsdown 4 (which is a BATC project, so we have tried to document it). Documentation for non-BATC projects is more difficult!

My opinion is that the limitation is in the implementation of the USB2 interface on the Pluto. However, there are others that are much more knowledgeable about the Pluto than me......

Am I correct in thinking the "Pluto +" clone has USB3, and if so has it been proven to show advantages because of this? Anyone any idea what the next implementation of the genuine AD sourced Plutos might bring that's of potential benefit for DATV? Thanks. Chris 2E0ILY
