OpenTuner with PicoTune v3

Post by g1tzc » Tue Jan 14, 2025 11:58 am

I couldn't see another thread for this but sorry if there is one.

I am trying to use the PicoTune v3 with thge OpenTuner software and am getting errors No Hardware Detected and Error Connecting MediaSource: Minitiouner Variant.

What has been done so far;

Checked in device manager and after a long battle against Windows 10 not wanting to accept an unsigned driver the drivers are installed and say they are working correctly.

Pico board connected to USB
PicoTuner powered up after 15 seconds
Software Launched.

This is the information displayed during the session if it helps.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Neil

Has the Picotune ever worked or is this a new build?
Have you tried it on a Portsdown system and did it RX ok?

If a new build have you checked all of the voltages as per the build instructions and are they correct
I take it you followed the build instructions and the Pico programmed correctly?
What version of the Pico are you using, does it have an IP network port?
I have just recently completed mine just worked first time, so happy to try and help getting yours running.

By way of an update, it works fine in my Ryde box running from a Raspberry Pi 4. The PicoTuner v3 board is connected to the Pi with the same USB cable as was used for the above.

@ Keith - no it is a basic Pico with no ethernet, wifi or bluetooth. I have tried two Pico devices both giving the same result. I haven't yet put the Portsdown in to the Pi but will do that later today. This one I want as a set top box for simple demo of receive. I have another board ready to build for the full Portsdown experience.

hi.. so your pico tuner works on ryde.
It tells me its usb connected and not networked.

Next, what version Open tuner are you using.
Have you even used opentuner before on a other tuner.

What kind of windows version.

Little more info should tell us something.

Hi all,

Sorry for not giving enough information.

Windows 10 Home 64 bit
Intel Core i3-4160 CPU @ 3.6GHz
16Gb RAM
1Tb HDD
Test Mode
Build 19041.vb_release.191206=1406

With Pico connected to raspberry pi
PicoTune v3 works on Ryde with all buttons working correctly
PicoTune v3 works on Portsdown

With Pico connected to Windows
Open Tuner does not detect the tuner with the information shown above given in the command prompt box.

Its ages since I used my PT on my PC but I seem to recall the choice of power source and sequence had an effect. Does windows 'bing' when you plug in to the PC USB?

Yes it does ping and it does all that it should do in device manager. Both devices show up (after a struggle against it wanting to - see above).

Everything seems to do what it should. It's one of those not vital things but would be nice to sort. The system is now running happily on the Pi, in its new housing.

I might try it on my windows 10 tablet to see if it is specific to this PC.

You are right about the power up thing. You do seem to need to connect the USB then wait a short period of time before switching on the 12v.

It will depend if you are using the 12V power or not for the pico. Jumper 4. If you power the tuner just from USB, JP4 has to be in position 1-2, all OK except you won't have an LNB supply unless you also connect 12V. In that case the 12V is just powering the LNB supply.

If you power it just from 12V then JP4 has to be in position 2-3 to power the 3v3 (and consequentially 1v1) regulators. That's the VIN_ALT supply used for powering the board when there is no USB connection.

If you have JP4 in 2-3 and then try to power it from both 12V and USB, I am not sure what will happen if you connect 12V first. Perhaps as the Pico will already be powered, it, or windows, may not detect the USB being plugged in.

So, if you don't have ethernet, you are always going to need have the USB plugged in, so JP4 should always be in position 1-2 unless the USB port can't supply enough current. If you are using Ethernet, then use JP4 2-3 and just don't plug in the USB.

Yes Mike I am using external 12v. That was why I said I was plugging the USB in and trhen powering up. Sorry I should have said powering with 12v.

I'm going to try it on another PC and see if it is just this machine that is causing the issue. It's happened with other things in the past and it is an easy thing to take out of the scenario.

I've got a spare one that has, literally, had nothing apart from Windows loaded on it.

Neil.
