FT290 mod

Post by G0DQH » Sat Sep 18, 2021 1:09 pm

Hi Folks
The S meter is full scale & the mod is to fit a i meg resistor across the base & emitter of Q1014.
Can anyone tell me please where Q1014 is on the board please, as there are no markings.

I resolved the problem with the S meter going full scale in a different way which maybe worth trying before modifying your FT-290R MK1.

My FT-290R MK1 had not been turned ON for a number of years being stored in a warm cupboard. When I turned it on all was fine, however after a couple of days all of a sudden the S meter went full scale or somewhere in between. I was going to try the 1Mohm resistor modification however after leaving the FT290R turned ON powered from 12vDC for about a week and also transmitting and receiving many times, effectively exercising the PTT in both SSB and FM. The S meter slowly started to work correctly returning to the left-hand side. Now it rests where it should on the left-hand side with no input signal and responds correctly giving an indication of the signal strength in all modes, TX power level and battery voltage.

I am not 100% sure why this worked however my guess is the electrolytic capacitors slowly reformed themselves.

Please share your solution to the problem in case my FT290 subsequently fails in the future.
